I don't think it will be worth it to get the 55nm model if the rumor is even true at all. If they make it 55nm, they will boost the clocks, so you'll end up with a card that emits around the same amount of heat probably. The difference will probably end up being something like the 8800GTX > 8800 Ultra or less. Just get a nice aftermarket cooler for the thing and put on a smile. I think that's what I'm gonna do, I wanna use my eVGA step up before July 7.

Will it fit into an Antec 900 (I think the 8800GTX pushed this one) or CM 690 case?

Both the 260 and 280 are IIRC 10.5 inches. In other words, the same dimensions as the 8800GTX.

I won't be buying any of these cards until I need them. My 8800 gtx runs all my games maxed on my 24" monitor. The only reason I could think of to get one of these right away is to play crysis at higher quality.

Reading the tenor of conversation at b3d, both launches look very exciting. By the end of the summer I will be dx10, vista for sure!!

GT200 to be in short supply.

Computex 08: Tiny allocations to the channel

If the information we were told is correct, then Nvidia is having some problems ramping up the production of the GT200 series and this sounds all too familiar when it comes to new Nvidia products.

We?ve heard that even large distributors have a hard time getting more than a handful of cards and that is only if they place large orders of products that Nvidia?s partners have overstock of.

This isn?t the first time this has happened when it comes to Nvidia products and we?re not sure if it?s a deliberate scam to push up prices of these highly sought after cards. With the additional requirements of the distributors having to buy additional cards to get their hands on the new fast cards, we?re really starting to wonder what kind of games Nvidia is playing.

So in other words, if you want one of these new cards when they launch, if you see one for sale, get it, as you won?t get a second chance.

It seems AMD is going to have chance to sell more 770s.

Physics to get 16 titles by Xmas

40 more by summer 2009

Nvidia's boss of The Way it?s Meant to be Played, VP Roy Tayler, told Fudzilla that Nvidia is currently working with well established developers on 16 titles that will support Physics. They should hit the shelves by the end of the year.

These sixteen includes Bionic Commando from Capcom and Shadow Harvest from Black Lion studios, at least Nvidia could talk about these two.

Just remember that all Unreal Engine 3 games support Physics and since Physics will run on Geforce 8 series cards on that CUDA thing, you should finally see some really nice physics on your PC.

Roy also said that we should expect 40 more titles by summer of 2009.

Nvidia is serious about Physics and with its The Way its Meant to be Played, we believe that it shouldn?t be too hard and that they can pull it off. If anything, Nvidia really knows how to reach developers and publishers and TWIMTBP is one of the most successful marketing programmes that they ever pulled off.

I'll believe it on launch day.

This article on G80 (also from 'Fraud' Abazovic) turned out to be BS...

http://www.theinquirer.net/en/...d-will-outstrip-supply

I know I had zero problems getting hold of an 8800GTX locally in Atlanta, GA on launch day, nor did I have any problems with getting a replacement a few days later because the first one was defective.

teh 8800GT and HD3870 were pretty much out of stock all over the place a week after launch to about a month after launch. So if you wait to see what HD4870X2 has to offfer, I bet the GTX 280 and 260 will be widely available by then.

There's no logical reason to believe the launch of any past product is indicative of the launch of any future product.

It's also asking a little much (IMHO) to have people wait till rumored launch date of August-September to see another card, when we don't even know if that card will make rumored launch date, or what it's price, performance, or availability will be.

Not to mention people with CF motherboards could just consider two 4870s long before then if they want to go ATi- should be comparable performance.

.

there is also no logical reason to believe most of what FUDzilla says is true.

Does it not follow logic however, that with more time, nVidia will make more chips?

Another good reason to wait a bit, is that the prices will drop to below MSRP.

I am not asking anyone to do anything...but if the cards are not available then there really isn't much option but to wait.

Yeah..Vantage which has:
-Sapphire's (AMD's AIB partner) logo's
-Has the best dual GPU support in any 3D software
-R600-architechture still fits very well for fixed path..

in 3Dmark...Yawn.

sensationalistic headlines are not becoming

ATi cards kick serious butt at 3DMark though- and to some people, that's a big deal. I'm more interested in gaming benchmarks myself, but the 3DMark guys are sort of like drag racers- they don't necessarily care if their machine is better for overall use, they want rank on orb.

its true but those tests are with Vantage, not 3dMark06 which was notorious for favoring ATI cards. In case you didn't notice, Nvidia cards actually perform better than ATI cards (pre-ATI driver hotfix at least) all around, to the point some people were saying Nvidia was workign w/ Futuremark. Anyways, if you actually see the 3dMark Vantage testing methodology on extreme settings, it's a much better benchmark than 3dMark06 or earlier was

Rusin,

On your original post you should change Memory clocks to Memory rate, because technically the clock is 1100 MHz but the rate is 2200 MHz.

Palit is releasing non-reference GTX 280 card under Gainward-brand

I'll say it again, I miss the Gainward brand! An improved non-reference design right out of the gate was quite attractive back when they were readily available in the USA. Palit is selling some nice cards here now, but they're usually late to market.

I have a feeling this is going to be a very tough time for indecisive folks (like myself) who look at every variable. If this launch is anything like the last... Reference cards out the gate, followed by a hard to get period, followed by oc releases, followed by non-reference releases, followed by price drops, followed by 55nm, etc.

I know this, I'd buy one of these Palit designs out the gate if they were available. I like their offerings. No frog though..

Well if you are indecisive..then Palit has enough time to bring their cards for you ?
----

That Gainward GTX 280 seems to be first Nvidia highend card for long time that doesn't use reference pcb+backplate? Remember that Palit's 8800 GTX/Ultra's were reference cards..as is 9800 GTX and 9800 GX2. Funny though that Palit releases their non-reference model GTX 280 under brand that doesn't sell at States, only in Europe and Asia . Specially when this is the first time in very long time when Nvidia has allowed AIB to bring highend card with non reference PCB.

..and I'd believe they would move towards GDDR5 first with performance level cards..not high end (since high end has that wide memory bus.
Nvidia did start to use GDDR3 in the days of GeforceFX. First model using GDDR3 was Geforce FX 5700 Ultra (with 128-bit memory bus)..when for example FX5950 Ultra (256-bit) used just GDDR.

You'll get the general idea when you look at Palit's 8800 GTS, GT and 9600 GT coolers . At least it worked with 8800 GTS 512. With 783/2250 clocks it never reaches those reference cooler temperatures (with reference clocks) and is still silent. In that GTX 280 card it has much larger fan, but I think it's a safe bet that it also has beefier heatsink.
