Nvidia GTX950 ---> AMD 380X .... Just no ?

Currently have an Nvidia GTX 950.

I play a lot of Codemasters - F1 2013, Dirt Rally.
I can see myself playing the new DOOM game, hoping for better playable framerates at that medium detail.

I have a 2560x1440 monitor, typically running games on the GTX 950 at 1080p medium with good frames.

I'm looking to run 2560x1440 with similar or better FPS and maybe a little extra detail.

I don't want to spend more than $250

1. Is the 380X going get me better FPS at the high res?
2. I keep reading that AMD is releasing new cards "any day" - is it happening so soon that buying the 380X (assuming criteria 1 is met) would be genuinely a dumb purchase today?

Not worth if you want a decent 1440P experience. R9 390X / GTX 980 is the minimum you want for smooth 1440P gaming.

With releases 2-3 months out, might as well wait to see what Pascal and Polaris bring to the table.

The 380x will perform better.

It probably won't be enough to justify the cost.

I would use what you have until next round of cards come this summer. You should be able to have a more significant upgrade within your budget.

Grab a 390 if you want better perf/$ now, but you should wait Polaris for having the same performance at 1/3 of the power.

I said screw it and just ordered an XFX R9 390.

I'll get a lot of enjoyment out of the 390 now, and its 8GB might make it useable for one of my kids in a couple years.

I just hope my Corsair RM 550w p/s is strong enough.

Poaris performance and price are unknown at this point. Also no solid release date has been announced.

The 390 is a very solid card that punches well above its weight. And it can be bought for cheap now, not in 6 months.
As for power consumption savings... this is great but i bet both cards idle around the same. Anyways the high Radeon wattage cards are blown out of proportion to performance but ask yourself hoe much game time do you spend over a week.

390 would be a worthy upgrade in terms of performance, anything lower than that is questionable..

I would wait for newer GPUs, the 950 should be OK for most games, buying a 390 means buying a GPU from 2.5 years ago, it lacks things the 950 supports and eats some power, something Polaris should solve... but yes, in terms of performance, it is clearly faster, specially for 1440P.

380X seems like a not so great deal... but... the GPU is faster and you have double the vram, it would be an improvement.

Remember to remove your old drivers before putting the new card in.

LOL, I got so excited when the card showed up ( yay! 1-day shipping from Amazon Prime ), I failed to do so.

When Windows 10 came up, I was able to remove all my old Nvidia components and install the AMD drivers.

Tests look fine.
