Going to test BF4 with a pagefile today, its a example i have gotten to crash as well on queue with memory peaking at 3.5gb.DSR and a 2732x1536 resolution with 150% super sampling is a guarantee crash.

That game refuses to use anymore then 3.5gb as well,i got nvidia memory errors, black screen crashes and simple system lock ups.Oddly enough i just couldn't get my old 770 to crash period,it wouldn't crash for anything in the world.

I believe it was one of the first examples people used when this issue was discovered....

Pagefile suddenly does allow peaking all the way up to 4gb,my system memory usage peaked at 6.3gb but large amounts of the pagefile got used up.Not sure the story on that.

Not sure if i had 16gb of memory if results are different but its certainly odd that peakage only goes over 3.5gb if one is enabled with my set up.

I need a more typical game with typical settings but i have officially found 3 games that all do the same exact thing.Any demo out or free app or game i could try out?

Its not a VRAM issue as shown.

Actually, the reviewer wrote that all 3gb and less GPUs, such as the 780/ti and 280X suffered terrible frame latency when running on max settings (without MSAA even!). I would guess its probably the game engine holding lots of textures to cache for LOD, as players zoom in or pan, the LOD will load in & out textures of different quality. It was designed with 4gb in mind when on max settings as there's no frame spikes on 4gb cards.

This is a case of lack of driver optimizations, whereby the 970 presents itself as 4gb when its not so in this game, its treated like a real 4gb card.

The reviewer noted specifically the problem occurs ingame when panning and zooming.

I showed 2.2GB usage, everything maxed same resolution as tested but with much more units in a 4vs4 battle. Also the game cant even use above 3GB unless you select unlimited VRAM with its warnings. And unlimited requires custom settings and not just the extreme quality prefix. The game automaticly downgrade settings on the fly if you hit your VRAM limit or up to 3GB if the unlimited box isnt checked.

So no, it was not designed with 4GB in mind. It was designed with 3GB in mind.

I can get stutter in a battle as well. The absolute peak I can get is 2.6GB usage with more than extreme settings. And the stutter isnt due to the GPU. But due to CPU limitations with the main thread hitting full core usage.

And the text is claiming that the GTX970 has problems because of the 3,5GB limit. Yet the GTX960 gets higher minimum frames with 2GB or 1,5GB less vram.

And after they acitivated 4xMSAA the minimum frames dropped only about one 1FPS while the number of the GTX960 gets down from 33 to 22FPS.

These numbers dont make sense. And who knows what setting they used for the frametime graph...

I dont know if this has been posted before,

Yes, it has, about a half dozen times already.

This is a forum for technical discussion.

Same ole Nvidia

I hope they get something from them.

Nvidia has a history of this and it's why I have not bought one thing that has an nvidia chipset or gpu.

Back in 2005 many people payed for the highest end card. The 6800GT (series) was a $400.00+ card that had a built in Video Processor (vpu) and many people bought it because it was meant to be a fantastic gaming card plus great for encoding video.

Problem that was found shortly after release was that the VPU didnt work. Even watching a video would send the cpu to 100% load, let alone trying to encode one. For months nvidia promised a driver update to fix it. Until they figured out it was a hardware problem and nothing that drivers would help. By then any exchange time from where you bought it had passed.
No refunds, no credit towards a working card and no trade in's towards a working card. Basically a big FU from nvidia as they laughed all the way to the bank.

BUT

For an addition $30.00 they would sell you software that would help and drop the cpu load down to 80% on your broken card.

They have not seen 1 cent of my money in ten years

Nice to see they have not changed their business practices and I hope some people will not give them money in the future because of it.

That was the NV40 and NV45 PureVideo debacle. IIRC, Anand himself tried for months to get Nvidia to respond to his questions as to why PureVideo wasn't functioning even while they still kept touting it as a "feature". Eventually they admitted that it was partially broken and fixed it in the later NV41 release. But nothing was ever done for those who purchased an NV40 or NV45 based video card.

Wow,did they actually do something that stupid? That is a bit out there if so.Built my first rig around a 6200le but oddly enough i wasn't watching much of anything video wise back in 2006.I still had cable and enjoyed it. Would i have been screwed if i did enjoy videos on the pc back then?

I'm seven years Nvidia free....and I am happy.

This 970 debacle just reinforces my opinion about Nvidia. They are scum.

I'm glad this is happening they need to be held accountable for their actions, maybe the card did have 4GB VRAM but it wasn't all usable, so they might be able to get away with that because it did have 4GB VRAM however on the ROPs side of things, they will not.

Decided not to wait around any longer. No response by now is pretty telling. I chatted with newegg today and they happily accepted my return for store credit, which is fine with me. No hassle at all. Free shipping back, no restocking fee. I'll probably wait for the new 380X or something. Not really digging the 980 price/perf.

Thread reopened. NIGELG's opinion is on topic for this thread; those of you who decided to make his post the new subject of discussion aren't.
