Funny, I just installed those.

It seemed to hang windows xp on reboot - I got a blank screen, the keyboard didn't seem to function (the numlock light or caps lock lights wouldn't come on), and the HD light stayed on. I reinstalled windows, installed all the drivers, rebooted, and had the same result. However, this time I just walked away for a while. When I came back windows was running and now I have no problem when I reboot or shutdown.

These drivers seem fine if you are patient.

indeed it is.
I just installed the 5.10's tonight and did not install the IDE driver.
The only time I did install that, my system required a safe mode reboot, uninstall of those damned IDE drivers.
I NEVER install them on any system.

Well, I learned my lesson. I tried using the dvd drive for the for the first time after using those wonderful nvidia ide drivers and....hung my machine. I tried rebooting with the dvd in the dvd drive and...hung my machine. I take the dvd out and it boots up fine. I stuck a cd in the machine and...hung my machine. I reboot with the cd in the drive and...hung my machine. I take the cd out of the drive and it boots fine. I uninstall the drivers and stick a cd in and...it works!

moral of the story. Those drivers are crap!

I guess it might come down to the board in question and rest of your hardware, however I`m using the Nvidia IDE driver and have no problems on my DFI NF2 Infinity Ultra board, using internal CD-RW and external USB 2.0 Lite-On burner with no problems.

I have a VNF4 Ultra, and I installed the Nvidia IDE drivers that came with it when I got it 2 weeks ago. I have had NO problems with them, no hangs, lockups, etc, although only my opticals are actually on IDE, the rest are on SATA.

What burning software do you use? What burners have you tested the NV SW ide drivers with?

I currently use Nero6 Ultra for burning, and I have PowerDVD (and windows MP) to play DVD's from. I also INSTALL CD games from these drives, but always patch them afterwards, so they would really run off of the SATA drives exclusively. I have a Plextor (cannot remember the model) DVD/CD -RW drive for one of them, and a Sony DVD +-R +-RW drive (also cannot remember the model).

Just out of curiosity, what IDE drivers do you folks use INSTEAD of the Nvidia ones? Do you just leave the WindowsXP default drivers in place, or do you actually download other ones instead, and if so, where can I get them (and what are the advantages to using them)?

The SW drivers are considerably better when it comes to CPU usage compared to the default Windows driver.

I've installed them on an Epox 8RDA+, Abit NF7-S, Chaintech VNF-250 and now the A8N-SLI. I've never had a singe issue with burning cd/dvd's, loading games, etc. I used the NForce drivers that Asus has posted under the download section for the A8N-SLI, which has the 4.7 ide drivers. So far, other than the known NCQ and Maxtor problem (not driver related), they run great.
So count me in as a "minority", I suppose.

The only "real" problem I've had with NV IDE drivers is that ATI's MMC doesn't recognise drives DMA enabled with them which produces a dialog box, and can hang a scheduled recording. I've had no media burn issues with them at all.

I was not aware that the Nvidia Drivers had issues with NCQ drives. I know of someone on another forum who has the VNF4 (the same board I do), and is having HUGE performance issues with his new NCQ drive. What are the issues with NCQ drives (any additional information or links would be helpful), and are there any workarounds? I tried locating more information on this myself, but I was not able to find any.

Use the search function in this forum. There are several threads covering NCQ and this motheboard/chipset. There is even a thread called something like Maxtor and NCQ problems. Read through it, it will really give you an idea as to what is going on, I'm not going to make this thread about NCQ. Besides, I specifically stated that it wasn't a driver problem in the post you quoted.

Shawn

Do a search for "Maxtor NCQ" in the motherboard forums. I just did it and all of the appropriate threads come up.

I misunderstood your post then. The way it is worded "other than the known NCQ and Maxtor problem (not driver related)" makes it sound like there are 2 separate problems... An NCQ problem, and a Maxtor problem that is not driver related. My apologies.

No problem. Did you get a chance to read those threads? They cover the problem pretty well. Hopefully Maxtor support was right when they e-mailed me and said they've been in contact with Asus and tht a bios rev will fix it.
