A G4 with a GF2MX and OSX could actually make a half decent machine. I'm personally still a ways from using a mac, but it wouldn't be so bad with a nVidia board in it.

I´ve got nothing against Macs, especially now with OSX and Nvidia etc, but since they still have such a small percentage of the market they´re sold as luxury computers and that means that people like me (poor student ) can´t buy one even if I wanted too.

not true. Current 3dfx products sitll belong to 3dfx not nvidia. nvidia only bought the core of 3dfx. All apple needs not is a ghz g3 or g4 and osx. Also a couple of days ago Creative announced its MAc line of sound blaster lives.

ATI has been heading down this road for a long time. They are so poorly managed it is pathetic. One of the problems with both Matrox and ATI is getting good talent to move(and stay) to Canada. You have very good engineers from the USA who can choose to work in a place such as california and silicon valley, or choose to work in a...to be frank..a frozen Sh!thole 9 months out of the year. Doesn't take a brain scientist to figure out where they would want to work.

Either way, this is a major letdown for ATI I am sure. If Nvidia is able to get into Apples notebooks, ATI will go the same route as 3dfx

This was announced months ago, although it wasn't clear when the actual date would be and whether or not nVidia boards would be an upgrade or if the puters would ship with them. I wonder if the Radeon will be the upgrade, because AFAIK, the Geforce 2 GTS is not going to be an option.

However, I worry about the 2D quality, considering most of the Macs are primarily 2D design machines.

goddamn, nvidia is grabbing too much market share for my own good...NO MORE nvidia products for me...i think the next vid card i purchase is gonna by the kryo 64mb...

unless i want faster performance, in which case the radeon 64mb would be my next choice....
well, unless nvidia offers some amazingly awesome next gen card that doesn't cost more than my sex change...erm, my computer...

who said macs don't multitask?...i multitask w/ them all the time...i.e. running multiple tasks at once...what the hell are u talkign about?

Off Topic but,

Having visited San Jose and schtuff, I'd have to say I don't find that area very interesting, not being in the computer industry myself. And I absolutely hated Palo Alto. Both Toronto (ATI) and Montreal (Matrox) are much more varied culturally. San Francisco is also very interesting but it's kinda far to be considered Silicon Valley.

However, people get paid more, with a lower tax rate in Silicon Valley. I for one though, would choose Toronto over Silicon Valley anyday (and have), although I am biased, being Canadian. Also, despite the high cost of Toronto, the rents and home prices pale in comparison to many parts of Silicon Valley.

Sure, that may be part of it, but I betcha it more has to do with company management policies. Otherwise, ATI would never have made it to where it is today. Matrox on the other hand, was never really a serious contender in the greater scheme of things.

Eug - of course, I'm a Canadian who chose to live in Silicon Valley and weas never, ever interested in living in Toronto. If you're younger and willing to work hard, the US is a great place to be. I think the problem is getting Americans to move to Toronto and Montreal. It isn't hard to get them to move from Toronto and Montreal to the US.

We don't ride to school on dog sleds you know. I lived in Victoria and Nanaimo BC for nearly 20 years and I don't think it was ever below about -10 celcius the whole time I lived there, and even -10 is extremely rare. Tornoto has much the same climate as Detroit, there are only a few miles apart you know? I suppose they have thier cold times, but it's not like they are buried under a foot of snow &quot;9 months out of the year&quot;. Canada is a very nice place to live. I would honestly hate living in California...I think that most of the places down there are really horrible to live in. Granted I've only been in the larger cities like LA...but damn what a sh!thole. I'm sure that there are lots of nice places to live in the US, and there are lots of crappy places. It's the same in canada, there are lots of nice places to live and lots that aren't so nice.

The reason all the skilled workers move to the states is becuase they pay more and Canadian income tax is huge compared to the states. The canadian dollar is also worth nothing compared to the US.

The permafrost line runs through canada so if you go to the far north yes it's very cold. But did you know that land area wise Canada is bigger than the states? And most of our population is in the far south very near the US border. The cliamte up here really isn't that different that the US where most of the population lives.

Well, there was a poll taken here in Sillycone Valley a year ago and 80% of the people polled said that if it wasn't for their job, that they would not be living here. Same goes for me but only because my gf lives a couple of hours away.

Remember when ATi was going to have the Radeon in Macs, and then they leaked it moments before Jobs was going to give his keynote address, and Jobs blew a fuse and pulled the Radeon from the Apple line-up?

I believe Jobs has a personal vendetta against ATi since that moment, and he will not have peace until ATi is fully removed from all Apple stuff.

Kind of silly, though, isn't it? As some have mentioned, Apple's are mainly for 2D, and nVidia's 2D is not very good. Jobs is an odd fellow...let's call him &quot;odd Jobs.&quot;

That's okay... we Canadians can all move to the 'states where the slightest bit of snow sends people skidding off the road or into 97-car pileups, if you don't get shot first.
(Really, I'm just kidding.... mostly.)

Winnipeg sure gets a deep freeze during the winter, but I'd take this any day of the week over hot, humid air you can't breathe in. It's far, FAR easier to keep warm than to keep cool!

Of course, once I finish my degree, I'll go where the good job is. ATI better still be around in 2 years.
