Did the 6800gt ever drop to $199 when the 7800gtx came out? They simply stopped making them, and the supply just ran dry, without any significant price drop. If the 7800 series are also discontinued (and I heard they are) then the same thing will happen to the 7800gt.

But regarding performance crown, it's still the same as the 7800 GTX 512, so it's no faster than a X1900 XTX. Again, it looks like the 7900 GTX is just the real launch of the 7800 GTX 512 paper launch.

I guess the clockspeed jump means nothing..?

well, stores have to clear out of all the 7800GTs before 7900 arrives. If the price really get to $199, then I'd be in for 1.

you can't really complain about FEAR, since it's probably the most demanding game out right now. Your cards should be able to do 1600x1200 with max details for any other game though.

How I bought my x800xtpe. Was a cheap way to update an old computer. Is the problem with buying top of the line - tends to have a short shelf life before prices drop and performance suffers compared to the newest. Still this spring I want something special - if my bank can stand it.

Soft Shadows I heard drops the frame rate in half, so I wouldn't really consider using them since that isn't really efficient considering the image quality gain. Also if you want great performance in F.E.A.R. consider X1900 Crossfire, as the R580 really excels in F.E.A.R. compared to the G70 Series, but I don't think the G71 SLI will be what you would call slow in this game either.

My 7800GT SLI is only 3 fps slower than an X1900XTX (65fps vs 68fps) in FEAR @ 1280x1024 4x/16 AA/AF all settings to maximum, soft shadows on.

I expect nothing less from a 7900GTX.

Also, I only gain about 3fps when turning soft shadows off.

I was assuming g71 would get more pipes because they are shrinking to 90nm. I run my current gtx's at 510/1440 and have been dissatisfied since i bought them. I can only run fear at 1600x1200 with no AA (see foot note). Quake 4 can do 2048x1536 but still no AA. I get ~8000 in 3dmark 06. This might sound a little extremist but I spent $980 on two cards. I expected more. If I had only spend $200 on a 6800GS I would have been happy with 800x600. So on march 9th, I will trade in my current cards to evga and get two 7900's. It will only gain me 140mhz core and 160mhz ram. Granted the 7900's will only be $499 and my current gtx's were $450 so I will only pay $100 to upgrade both cards but I really feel that If a person is going to drop $1000 on graphics for their computer, they should at liest be able to get 2048x1536 4xAA on games that came out four months ago! Anyone agree or disagree??

*foot note: The new directx and fourceware pathces allow softshadows and AA together. I only get 28fps minimum in fear time demo @ 1600x1200 2xAA softshadows enabled.

lol you should've saved some money on this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102629R or wait and see how the 7900 performs vs the x1900

That should solve your FEAR issues.

Do what this guy said !!!! <---- But rather then Crossfire get a Cheap AMD Dual core & Overclock it add a single X1900XTX& also overclocked that

It sounds like ur really underperforming or something cause I use to get 28fps @1720x1290 2xAA and that was with my 7800 gt SLI @454/1183. My advice sell ur 7800 gtxs asap and hold ur money for 7900 or x1900

Doing a 32 pipe chip will results in lower yields at the expected frequency, the higher the frequency, the lower the yields, and since the G70 is a nice arquitecture there's no need to make sucn an overhaul (Though it cannot do HDR with FSAA simply doesn't matter that much). So I feel that the 7900GTX will run at par or better in somes benches against the X1900 XTX due to it's higher frequency compared to it's predecessor.

The fact that you're complaining about not being able to play the most demanding game ever released @ 1600x1200 w/2x AA suggests to me that you're very spoiled.

im pretty sure it will just be the 7800 gtx 512 pretty much. the 7900 gt is just a 7800 gtx. just new names guys. not being biased or anything but nvidia isnt bringing anything new to the table. x1900 brang 3 shaders . this is just a new name.
and if it is 32 pipes or what ever they are saying. pretty sad that u need that many pipes to compete with a 16 pipe card. come on now.

wait i have a nice side to me i think its good for competition and prices tho. let the war continue!

ZOMG!!! ITz ONlY G01NG TO GOT 24 PIPER'sLINES!!!!!111!!11!1111

I think 24pipelines is pretty good.

If you think you should be getting more for the price you are paying, well too bad, because you pay a lot for new hardware, and usually it doesn't live up to the amount of money spent on it. What you should have done is waited for the 7900 to come out, then bought the 2 7800GTX's. They would have been cheaper, and not that much worse than the 7900's.

Basically, follow whatever the hell that guys name is law. At least wait a little before buying them damnit.

I got an eVGA 7800GT (516) for $300 at Xmas which means I'll be eligible for Step-Up if the 7900GT is good, but if the prices for the 7800GT stay at or below the current $250 price point, I'll just SLI and let the people with too much money and too little man meat spend twice as much to get a marginal improvement in one game that I've already finished and will be unlikely to play again.

Hmm, if only NV had efficent AA. They would really excel at shader heavy games. I jsut hope they tweaked there memory controller to make AA abit more efficent instead of your average of 30% hit in performance.

Damn, nice price. Are these the 512mb ? If so I feel bummed now that I recently picked
up a xtx for $600 when I couldve gotten 7900gt sli for $600 since I already have a sli bored.
