Nvidia likely response to Vega

Would seem to me Vega is very vulnerable to an Nvidia response. gtx1080 prices are not high ($499 spotted at Newegg). The 1080 is a poor mining card, so stock and pricing should not be affected much. What if Nvidia set a new MSRP for the 1080 @ $450? IMO would be a killer move. In one stroke, it could seriously siphon off sales of both 56 and 64 Vegas. Of course AMD could respond similarly, but I think it would not be as pleasant for them to do so as Nvidia could. Not sure if they would even feel the need to rush out Volta, but would be a crushing blow to AMD if they did.

So will Nvidia do anything or just ho hum it along as if Vega is not that important to them at this point in time?

Nvidia has no reason to respond. AMD is late, is worse in essentially every parameter and doesn't even have better value.

The 1070 is in 56 territory. But the 6-8% performance advantage of the 56 will make it more attractive to many buyers who dont care about perf/watt. The 1080 however, if @ $450 may bring it within budget of 1070/56 potential buyers. And performing much better of course.

Small $50 price drop is what I expect. It's not needed though, but it will put Nvidia cards firmly ahead MSRP pricing wise. IMO, Nvidia should have done this BEFORE the reviews to have the GTX 1080 firmly winning.

So I wouldn't expect anything at this point until maybe holiday season.

GTX1080 is on par with Vega64, they don't need to change anything there and it already had a reduction to $499 from $599. 1070 on the other hand is at >$379 from the beginning and vega56 is a bit faster. I expect the 1070 to fall to $349, with good customs for $399 which battle v56.

price cuts .. would really do nothing in this climate would it? Supply and demand is setting the prices at this point and damned be arbitrary msrp list prices. I think Nvidias response to this will likely be a ~Titan II or 1080TI-ti that goes for ~2000.- bucks, milking the high end.

At least they don't try to buy game developers, and force them, or trick them, to gimp their game's performance when used with products from competitors.
Has 'gimping' been evident in any of the benches used in vega? Please cite. If you want to dig up odd examples from past that have no bearing on vegas performance today, would be nice if you could do it in another thread. Thanks.

Basically both companies will sell what they can,and enthusiasts on tech forums will spend more time arguing about tech than actually using it,whilst probably having more of it than most gamers!!

One of the reviewers today, maybe PcPer, said that Nvidia officially told them they aren't dropping prices on any of their cards.

Volta for gaming, we haven’t announced anything. And all I can say is that our pipeline is filled with some exciting new toys for the gamers, and we have some really exciting new technology to offer them in the pipeline. But for the holiday season for the foreseeable future, I think Pascal is just unbeatable. It’s just the best thing out there. And everybody who’s looking forward to playing Call of Duty or Destiny 2, if they don’t already have one, should run out and get themselves a Pascal.

We could potentially see a Pascal refresh or maybe some new SKUs.. who knows.

Nvidia won't do anything. Only thing I could imagine is taking resources away from volta consumer projects and assign them to other projects. No need for rushing out Volta. I doubt even NV could foresee how crappy Vega will be.

Then they will release GTX 2080 and 2070 (GV1070) with another $50+ price hike and milk especially the 2080 as flagship for 6 month (expected the 2080 to cost $699 at release and a 2070 $450). Then they release a cut down Titan based on GV102 and milk that for 6 month and then they will release a 2080 TI and full GV102 Titan and milk those.

Sad time to be a PC gamer with the current GPU, RAM and SSD prices.

I guess wifey and I will be hanging on to our Skylake i7s with gtx 970 and 1060's for a while. Was hoping I could snatch 1080 performance for $400.
