From what I was reading we might see the asus strix model coming up on june 4th at retailers. Also newegg just put a coming soon for the gigabyte gtx 1080 G1. Hopefully that comes out on the 4th as well.

I really wanted to go with the asus strix version, because im an asus fan boy lol, but honestly I will take whatever card I can get. My goal is to one way or another get a 1080 on june 4th if they are available. I will not buy a founders edition card personally, but the second the aib's are out I will grab one.

Lot's of current cards on the market with default clocks ~1000 and only get 100-150mhz OC.

IMHO 10-15% is 'pretty standard' and decent for an OC. Less than 10% would be a 'turd' and getting more than 20% means it is pretty darn good. Most GPUs land somewhere in the 10-15% area. Solid, but not amazing.

Just like with what we saw after SB CPUs, we get used to amazing overclocks and not all products match that.
Excellent post.

My GTX980 TI SC in rig 1 below is already OC'd 102 on the core - 1000 stock vcore 980TI vs 1102 stock for 980 TI SC. I have pushed my vcore to nearly 1300 but instability starts.

On my Sapphire Tri-X 290s in rig 2 below, they are also stock OC's (R9 290 stock vcore 947 and Sapphire Tri-X OC 1000 vcore). I'm lucky to hit at most 1100 vcore and still be stable. I'm am somewhat conservative on OCing and really enjoy custom water cooling to keep temps lower.

To call the GTX 1080 a "turd" at OCing is to first ignore the high stock vcore, 1607 and second dismiss the effort to consider boost 3.

I recently read on one forum that the 1080 stock vcore was originally @1375 to 1400 vcore in testing but the engineers made some changes and tweaks and were able to settle upon 1607 which was quite a jump.

I suspect that the GTX 1080 was released with much less headroom than a stock GTX 980 TI but from everything I read it outperforms a GTX 980 AND a GTX 980TI.

Some synthetic performance results from GP100:

http://videocardz.com/60881/first-and-only-benchmarks-of-pascal-gp100-spotted

Fully featured GP104 coming to laptops?

According to the report from PCGamer, NVIDIA has no plans to release the high-end M series under GeForce brand. It basically means there won’t be any GeForce GTX 1070M and GTX 1080M graphics cards, but there will be GTX 1070 and GTX 1080 for notebooks. In other words NVIDIA will be following the same path they did with GeForce GTX 980 for notebooks, by offering desktop variants with the same clocks and configuration for high-end gaming laptops.

PCGamer: According to our contacts, Nvidia is readying the release of its new 10-series chips for notebooks. The kick is, they won’t be M versions of desktop GPUs. They will be the same chips used on the desktops, just operating at a lower TDP—we’re told there will be the same number of shader units, etc.

Got my 2nd 1080 FE (sold the other to mostly pay for this one) to play around with a little. So far, it is more than happy to sit at full boost between 2025-2050, but doesn't like to be >2050mhz. It is not throttling at all, sitting at ~65-70C at this boost with ~30% fan.

I haven't tried much in forcing higher VIDs or anything yet, just some basic techniques. Running great in the GPU external enclosure...

Does it sustain that speed after running a heavy game for 10-20 mins? If so, you got a much better card than some have.

My FE keeps the speed hour after hour

And that's with 28-30C ambient and packed in a ITX case.

What clock is it keeping?

My FE is doing 2K with no problems running Doom at max settings. I have a custom fan profile (this fan is MUCH quieter than Titan X fan for a given setting) and I'm very pleased with the performance. When it comes to distributed computing (primegrid) I'm running 1911 at 98 percent fan. This is in a Raven case that has a cpu doing DC and it's putting lots of hot air in the case. Overall I'm pleased.

When you run the custom fan profile do you have a program running in the background for it when your PC starts up.

I'm running the latest Afterburner beta. It's the only one that supports the 1080. All my tests have been after running primegrid which pushes my GPU really hard so everything is HOT.

Yeah, played Doom for a good 2 hours and the boost fluctuated between 1975 and 2050. Temps were mostly 62-70C. The fan noise was pretty minimal too, not fantastic (no pun intended) but not loud. I would say acceptable.

The Core has pretty nice airflow and there aren't any other components , which does help I think too.

Sorry to burst your bubble but all the FE cards have been for sale for almost a week now and are constantly out of stock every day, but for sale none the less.

How do the clock speed "modes" on cards like Asus and MSI work? Do I have to install a program to choose the mode before playing? In that case, whats the point or difference when I've used Afterburner for years for this anyway? Or is there any advantage or ease of use for pre programmed modes?

I'd like to see factory memory OC too. Saves me the hassle. Strange how there seems to be very little interest from manufacturers in doing that now.

Nevermind misread your post.. yeah, only 2 with a ram overclock out of the box.

IIRC almost nothing shipped with memory OC on the 700 line too.

So it's June 4. Is there a single Asus GTX 1080 Strix available for sale or was this another paper launch?

Seems a bit like the AIB cards have slipped a little. It might then take them longer to actually appear on sale in shops for a bit due to pre orders - looking on the Overclockers forums they're into comfortable three figure preorders for a few of the bigger names/types of cards.

They did actually seem to get a decently sized batch of FE's in on ~Friday sometime still even a few left.
