Yeah.. if it's on and running and water contacts it, and contacts dust on the surface of it, then it'll just fry the thing instantly, or in 1-15 seconds or so. Backplate or not won't matter. Although if you have a solid-metal backplate with no holes, you -may- get lucky and something leak onto it and not touch the video card for a while.. might buy you like +30 seconds in a leak situation.

Sadly that's only what, as fast as a GP102 @ 1.9GHz? If it can hit 2.1GHz on air as well, an air-cooled 1080Ti will blow away even the fastest LN2 1080s.

On a positive note Overclock3D got their ASUS Geforce GTX 1080 Strix to 2.1 GHz using the automatic overclocking tool. Might be possible to push it a bit further with some manual tuning. Probably my favourite custom design from this first batch.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Goes On Sale

NVIDIA's more economically significant graphics card based on the "Pascal" architecture, the GeForce GTX 1070, goes on sale from today (10/06). The card starts at US $379, with NVIDIA selling the reference-design board for a $70 premium, as the GTX 1070 Founders Edition, priced at $449. With NVIDIA claiming performance levels higher than the previous-generation $999 GeForce GTX Titan X, the GTX 1070 could prove to be the gateway to 4K Ultra HD gaming with reasonably high eye-candy.

Based on the 16 nm "GP104" silicon, the GeForce GTX 1070 features 1,920 CUDA cores, 120 TMUs, 64 ROPs, and a 256-bit GDDR5 memory interface, holding 8 GB of memory. The core ticks at 1506 MHz, with a GPU Boost frequency of 1683 MHz, while the memory runs at 2000 MHz (actual), 8 GHz (GDDR5-effective), yielding a memory bandwidth of 256 GB/s. Display outputs include three DisplayPort 1.4, one HDMI 2.0b, and a dual-link DVI-D.

BTW here's a custom Geforce GTX 980 Ti (Gigabyte XtremeGaming) at ~1500/2100 (core/memory):

Very similar result, and custom Geforce GTX 1070 can probably go above that.

For all the criticism this card got for having 1920 SPs and 256-bit GDDR5, it's performing very well.

I think its rather weird that people need to compare old Nvidia cards vs new Nvidia cards .......
I think its rather simple, If you have a gtx980ti and are happy with its performance, keep it, unless you need ~ 25% boost that a 1080 will provide. In this case buy a 630$ 1080 AIB card.
If you own a gtx980/970 or a AMD 390/390x and you want ~ 25 to 40% boost buy a 400$ 1070.
If you own a gtx960 4gb or AMD 380 and want a 35 to 45% boost, buy gtx970 or AMD 390 for ~ 250$ or wait a bit for the 250$ gtx1060/480.

If you game and want to use any card less than the above gtx960/380, buy a Xbox one or PS4.

Truth is there will always be a few games that are super demanding but I think for most games, 2 years I'd say.

I know this is an old argument but there's a lot that PC's can do that consoles can not... specifically 4k @ 60 FPS with two 1080's. And we have to compare them to the older cards. How else would we know if they're even any faster / an upgrade at all?

It all depends on what you determine "run good" and what your setup is. Do you have a basic 60 htz monitor and therefore your only target is 60 FPS @ 1440p? Then yes the 1070 will be fine for you. Do you have a high refresh-rate monitor like 120 htz and thus require 120 FPS in all games @ 1440p? If so then even a single overclocked, aftermarket 1080 can't deliver that in all games.

And there is no way to know the future for "how long". A new "killer app" games may come out next month. Or next year, or 2 years later that would demand a newer video card, there's no way to know.

Just an update. According to Chiphell the GP104-150 SKU, first mentioned by HardwareBattle back in April is actually a mobile (notebook) design. This means the VGA 'leaked' by Inno3D is most likely GP106-400 based, 'Geforce GTX 1060' could be the next in line to launch.

We can guess it will be about 480 speeds A.K.A 390/gtx980 speeds.

Seeing the die shrink get quite as far down the stack as GP108 - very cost sensitive down there - is perhaps a slight surprise. Maybe obliged by the iGPUs getting better.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 to feature 6GB 192-bit memory?

The first listing shows E2914 board, which is an engineering sample with GP106 processor. According to this data, this sample would sport 6GB ‘GDD(5)’ memory:

The second listing could explain why there are 6GB models of GP106. It seems that GP106 could feature 192-bit memory bus:

PG410-A01 SKU0030 GP106 192B 128MX32 DP+ COMPUTER GRAPHICS CARDS, 699-1G410-0030-100

Interestingly, the memory size on PG410 board is 4GB. While both boards carry different numbers, they also have different SKUs (20 vs 30). The PG410 SKU 30 could be 4GB model, while SKU 20 would feature 6GB.

Of course this is just my theory, but there might be two GP106 products in the making (apart from PG418 board shown in Drive PX 2 module).
