- Overall Performance

- Power Consumption

We've seen exceptional power consumption with Pascal on the GTX 1070 and 1080 - the GTX 1060 is no exception. While it is slightly less efficient than its bigger brothers, it is still miles ahead of AMD's latest and greatest. This superiority enabled NVIDIA to build a 120 W card that comes with the processing power of the GTX 980.

- Efficiency and Underclocking

The competing cards' power consumption is now on the x-axis, and frame rate replaces clock rate on the y-axis. Using the graph's horizontal lines as a reference, we come away with the realization that Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 1060 requires 61W to achieve 130 FPS at 1920x1080, whereas the AMD Radeon RX 480 needs 139W for the same frame rate in spite of its adjusted voltage. In order to average 90 FPS at 2560x1440, the GeForce GTX 1060 draws just under 62W, whereas the Radeon RX 480 comes in at 146W.

- Overclocking

In terms of overclocks, pushing the fan and power targets to their respective max settings in EVGA Precision, I was able to boost the GPU core and memory offsets by 190MHz and 600MHz, respectively. This resulted in a 14 percent performance boost, which is quite impressive. Surprisingly, the card wasn’t blisteringly loud running at its max 3,200rpm, either.

- Conclusion

Features aside, performance is what matters most to gamers. In seven of our nine benchmark titles, the 1060 is faster than AMD’s Radeon RX 480; it’s slower in AotS and Hitman. Averaging out the percentage differences between them, GeForce GTX 1060 is about 13.5% quicker at 1920x1080 across our suite. Its advantage slips to 12.5% at 2560x1440. Is that going to give you access to a higher resolution? Nope. The 1060 excels at 1920x1080 and can certainly handle 2560x1440, a lot like the GeForce GTX 970, Radeon R9 390, and RX 480. But the most you can hope for beyond those cards is a little less compromise on the detail settings at QHD.

- Models Available at Launch

A wide variety of cards are due to hit today, from most of the major players. The list of cards launching today include...

EVGA GTX 1060 edition: $249
EVGA GTX 1060 Superclocked (SC) Edition: $259
ASUS STRIX-GTX1060-6G-GAMING: $329
ASUS Turbo Edition: $249
PNY GeForce GTX 1060: $259
MSI GeForce GTX 1060 GAMING X 6G: $289
MSI GeForce GTX 1060 Gaming 6G: $279
MSI GeForce GTX 1060 Armor 6G OC: $259
MSI GeForce GTX 1060 6GT: $249
Gigabyte GV-N1060G1 GAMING-6GD: $289
Zotac GeForce GTX 1060 AMP 6GB: $279
ZT-P10600A-10L ZOTAC GTX 1060 Mini 6G: $249

- Linux

So if you are serious about an open-source driver, definitely go for the Radeon RX 480 but for those who want a Linux desktop that "just works" regardless of a binary-only driver, the GeForce GTX 1060 offers much better performance and power efficiency and all of the other leading features of Pascal.

No, no, it is how I'm going to use GPU. Haven't emailed MB producers as
I eventually have decided to get Skylake platform.

same FUD as it ever was. people were rumormongering based on unsourced forum posts and treating it as gospel...

pretty much the AT VC forum modus operandi in a nutshell.

And now three cards with stock and aftermarket models out by Nvidia.

I got my nephews the GA-GTX1060 WF for $250. Solid buy if you ask me. Can't wait to install it for them this weekend.

Seems my household is going all green for the first time ever. I've decided to just give in and get a G-Sync monitor, looking at the ACER Predator X34, so probably stuck on team green for at least another two years or longer if the monitor is solid.

With Overwatch getting 21:9 support, I feel like I'm in the stone-age with 16:9 still haha.

The X34 is an amazing monitor. I don't own one, but a buddy of mine got one and it's nuts.

I just can't get myself to pull the trigger

More so because I'm not even 100% confident in G-sync, and that it adds almost $400 to the price tag for a similar monitor but with A-Sync.

Man, if NV would just support A-Sync, I'd have no dilemma.

They actually aren't the same monitor. The XR341CK can only run to 75Hz, while the X34 goes to 100Hz. That's a pretty big difference in terms of frame-synced performance, because the sweet spot for smoothness is 70fps and above, in my experience.

Didn't say "same" said "similar."

The difference doesn't feel $400 worth it.

EDIT: And I wasn't even mentioning models, specifically. Just some a-sync models are going for like $700 (not Acer branded) while the Predator is $1200 woof!

I decided to break out my Kill-A-Watt in order to compare my current system to my previous 4-Way SLI 980 and 4-Way SLI Titan (original) system. The original wattage for those was posted here: http://forums.anandtech.com/showpost.php?p=36730252&postcount=35

I ran the same Fire Strike Extreme test at the highest wattage point in the first benchmark.

2-Way 1080 with 6950X @ 4.0GHz:

4-Way 980 with 5960X @ 4.0GHz:

4-Way Titans with 5960X @ 4.0GHz:

2-Way 1080s vs 4-Way 980s:

2-Way 1080s with 6950X @ 4.0GHz

4-Way 980s with 5960X @ 4.0GHz

I don't have any results of the 5960X with the Titan cards. Here's the results with the 4960X @ 4.5GHz. Shouldn't be too far off.

The extra refresh rate is really worth it, though. There's obviously a G-Sync tax here, but you are also getting a higher quality panel. If you are pairing this monitor with a high end system (and you've got a 980 Ti, that's high end to me), you'll see a benefit.

The thing with monitors is that if you buy a really high quality one, you are set for years. My XB270HU is likely to be my workhorse for years to come, don't regret buying it at all.

Got another MSI 1080 Gaming X, and happy to say this one has no coil whine whatsoever !

Overclocks to 2136mhz core with the fans on auto, memory starts artifacting over 5300mhz~ unlike the other one @5500mhz, not even mad since the noise was unbearable..

Edit: Weird, now overclocks memory fine @ 5500mhz without artifacting, guess it's safer to restart after getting a TDR to make sure things work fine.

For those of you interested in mobile Pascal, rumored to launch next month. NotebookCheck added 3DMark 11 results for mobile GTX 1060 (13690 pts). ~90% the performance of the desktop variant (15290 pts) at nearly half the TDP - 65W vs 120W.

AdamK47, Thank for that Info. I moved from a single GTX980TI SC to a GTX 1080 and my power usage dropped.

In your case, running the 2 GTX 1080s in SLI vs the 4 Titans/980s shows dramatic power differences yet almost the same graphics performance.

I can't wait to see your next post with those dual new Titan Xs in SLI!

Anybody know when firmware editing tools are going to be released? There seems to be a big wall at around 2.1GHz. I think if we could give these GPUs more voltage we would be able to get past 2.1Ghz easy with these custom AIB cards.

HI-FI Man first, thanks for your service to our country. GO AF!

I remember when I was reading a ton of forums about the Pascal chip I came across a thread which mentioned that Nvidia engineers testing Pascal were stuck on base clockspeeds @1400 and it took some significant engineering to tweek that to 1607 for the base.

Unlike the GTX980TI (Maxwell 28nm generation ?) the overhead of of the first generation of Pascal was pushed much harder to get better speeds.

Even with more voltage, I'm not sure how much of a ceiling is left for Pascal.

How true makes me wonder how they will increase the clock speed in the next generation?

Thanks, I'll be PCSing to Germany very soon.

It's impressive how high it's clocked now but even higher would be nice.

Watch out for the Overwatch 21:9 support. It's basically junk. They just reduce your FOV so you dont see anything more, you just zoom in more. It pretty much sucks.

Oh, didn't see this post. Can't you just adjust FOV to compensate? There is a FOV slider.

I'll check it out on her rig.

Yeah, if you're at max FOV now you actually get a net FOV reduction from going 21:9 which you cant adjust up from. If you're running below max FOV you may be able to get the same thing by increasing FOV on the slider.
