Tempting.

http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2...ices-on-latest-cards/1

We've been on the phone to Nvidia this morning and have word on price drops for the latest Nvidia graphics cards: GeForce GTX 280, 260 and 9800 GTX+. The exact pricing for us (or you) Europeans and our neighbours in the States is:
The GeForce GTX 280 drops to $449 or 359 Euros

GeForce GTX 260 drops to $299 or 239 Euros

GeForce 9800 GTX+ will come in at $199 or 169 Euro
Exact pound sterling prices are as yet to be determined since obviously our small island matters less, but you can extrapolate for yourselves a balance between Euroound exchange rate, with the inevitable "British tax that makes everything more expensive than it should", added on top.

The GeForce GTX 260 should now make the competition with the Radeon HD 4870 more fierce, as will the price drops for GeForce 9800 GTX+ with the Radeon HD 4850.

The GeForce GTX 280 price drop is in anticipated response to the Radeon HD 4870 X2's release in the next few weeks.

While a few people that have already bought cards might feel a little bitter, GeForce GTX 280 especially, we'd say that's just the price you pay for jumping on the bandwagon early. Competition is great for the consumer, and thankfully now we have it in spades.

considering that it is roughly equivalent to the 4850, which can be had for as little as $145AR, I don't think that "tempting" is the word I'd use. Maybe, "slightly less price-gouging due to heightened competition". I'd wait for a dual slot cooler for 4850 before buying this.

I welcome any price cuts, but you could pretty much get this card 6 months ago, for about $150 AR. Probably thinking, no way in the hell... Well, I am talking about the 8800GTS 512MB, which is basically the same card with slightly lower clocks, only slightly... My 8800GTS 512MB can run stable at 775/1911/2100, which, is only inferior to the GTX+ in power consumption (65nm versus 55nm) and memory bandwidth (slightly).

Anyway, again, I welcome the price cuts for sure... I am so happy with my 8800GTS 512MB that I don't feel the need to upgrade to either the 280, or the 4870 at this point, even though more performance is always 'tempting' whether I need it or not.

Thats really too bad for the green team.

I am a nVidia fanboi at heart, and I still might switch it up for an XFX 260/280 over my HD4870.

My only complaint about ATI is that their partners Sapphire/Powercooler etc are not anywhere near close to the Nvidia partners such as XFX/eVGA...if ATI had an equivilant nVidia would be in alot more trouble.

Price cuts are good all around though!

Visiontek offers a true "as long as you own the card" lifetime warranty on their ATI cards.

QFT...The nVidia partners are way better. Are there any North American based ATI partners (it seems to me that the NA based ones such as EVGA and BFG are the best ones)?

That's good to know; I didn't know that previously. I've been looking for a "EVGA-level" supplier of ATI cards b/c I'm considering a HD4870. Thanks for that info.

I really don't want to thread jack this at all. But while yes, Visiontek is the best ATI brand IMHO, the warranties aren't nearly as friendly as the eVGA and XFX brands. Overclock at your own risk/Heatsinks etc are not covered.

XFX has the most friendly Overclocker warranties (includes voltmods/aftermarket HSF and the double lifetime warranty)

eVGA Step-Up, Lifetime warranty, somewhat overclocker friendly.

Then you would have had to wait longer to enjoy it.

I say buy the part when you want it and have the money for it.

There will always be a cheaper, faster, better part coming.

Waiting can end up in a forever loop.

I still feel Nvidia need to license SLI to Intel else they might soon be in serious trouble. While price cuts might reduce the bleeding against the 4800 series on the short term, the inertia that come with cross-generation xfire, coupled with intel chipset dominance, is a much bigger threat i.e. a user with an existing AMD card will likely buy a new gen card for xfiring with the old than buy a new nvidia card and discard the old.

Imagine AMD being back in the CPU game, then it is highly likely that all leading chipsets will support Xfire, and without Nvidia having their own CPU, that could really spell doom. Nvidia should be teaming up with Intel to bash AMD, and not trying to oppose them. I dont see AMD ever overtaking Intel in the CPU biz but they could crush Nvidia in the GPU biz.

I got a 280 on launch day although I paid only $430 for it due to that MS cashback scheme. I expected it to fall to that level anyway by next month, but didn't think it would happen so fast. It's nice to see the results of good competition in any case.

With NIVIDA being this agressive now, anyone think we might see an all new GTX380 this fall? does NIVIDA give up this round completely now? or will we just see more price cuts?

They did.

NVIDIA Brings SLI Technology to Intel Bloomfield CPU Platforms

Though not as good as I would like but its definitely good news and a great step in the right direction IMO. The addition of the nForce 200 SLI processor is supposed to cost an additional $30.
Intel seems to have Nvidia and AMD at their mercy. Probably AMD and Nvidia should team up against Intel!?

I'm pretty sure that people who were early adopters new the risks ... there were enough rumours to be convincing enough to wait and see what ATI would bring to the table.

nVidia took a chance with these prices (it worked for their 8800 ultra) ... probably not expecting ATI to be that competative.

I wonder how long it will take these prices to filter down into the retail channel. BB has 15% off all BFG cards, but they still want $400 for the 260.

Might be the worst NV launch for retailers etc, but not for consumers. You have to take into consideration that this comment is from a bunch of guys who were probably all ready to gouge the hell out of GTX prices. So, they were a little disappointed.

This is a really good time for consumers of either side. The one thing that no one seems to be mentioning is that the ATI cards could have very easily been price gouged with all the fanfare they've received, but the price/performance competition between ATI and NV has kept retailers 'honest' for both manufacturers.

I really didn't want to buy a GTX 280 for $650, but at the $500 price I got it for I'm not complaining...
