Nvidia is expected to announce the world's first DirectX 10-compliant graphics chip, the GeForce 8800 (codenamed G80), in the middle of November, graphics card makers revealed.

Damnit, now I have to start saving $650

Sell X1900XTX, buy 7900GTO, step-up?

Of course, this doesnt mean you have to have DirectX10 to play games. Personally, I dont think DirectX 10 is going to be all that important until after VISTA launches. Which is Q2 2007 last I heard. And even then VISTA will support DirectX 9.0c from what I hear. Then again for those in the market for a new video card we now know when the DirectX 10 will launch. People can start planning better now.

I will take advantage of the eVGA step up plan if this is true. i'm hoping it isn't that much of a hastle though, but eVGA has been more then helpful to me for customer service

Why purchase the "G80" card when it will do nothing for DX10 until DX10 is actually released in Vista. Sit back and wait until the Radeon is out so you can at least compare which is best at DX10. I don't know why people have to jump at any new product to hit the market.... what for, bragging rights?

Have you seen the rumored G80 specs?

The fact that G80 is DX10 compliant is just a marketing gimmick as far as I'm concerned.

This card will smoke any DX9c card on the market. G80's bread and butter will be DX9.

DX10 performance will be dog slow probably, but the architecture of this card gives Nvidia the foundation for the real DX10 cards this time next year. Same for ATI and the R600.

Well, for those of us with eVGA, the step-up time frame is a factor. I'd rather pay the ~$200 difference on each card (assuming an MSRP of $600) for a total expenditure of $400 for dual G80 cards than to wait and spend $500-600 for single card.

Just curious, but when does your step-up period end?

BTW, I noticed that NVIDIA nearly always releases cards in the middle of the week. So, I only have a slight window in the 2nd week of November to get my Step-UP working.

EDIT: On second thought, I think I'm going to wait for R600 and see how the two stock up, my birthday's on 2/25, so they should both be out in great quantities then. And, a 7950GX2 should be more than enough to tide me over on highest settings, right guys?

Yea, but what's the price premium (on top of the $700 for the card) that you have to pay over today's high-end card? Remember that this thing is going to chew up and dissipate somewhere well north of 230w, according to current rumors.

Actually, the rumorued specs indicate that NV might have quite a good DX10 performance for years to come.

That's what I was trying to say.

I said "dog slow" as in when DX10 becomes the mainstream, probably in a year or so and there is a refresh. Kinda like Nvidia 6-Series and SM 3.0.

But this G80 architecture will most likely spawn Nvidia's entire run of DX10 cards.

For now it will be the crown jewel in Nvidia's DX9 lineup and will be effective for the first round of DX10 games.

Just curious, but when does your step-up period end?

My first one ends on Nov 27. Not sure of the exact date of the second one, but it would be 2-3 weeks later.

getting a card for DX10 right now is pointless.

i'm just going to get it to take advantage of my step up plan. ($200 for way way better performance than i'm getting now? count me in)

The only reason I can think for Nvidia to release this card so soon before Vista is it's DX9 capabilities. I doubt DX10 performance will be up to R600 standards (who knows though) but that isn't really important until we get a DX10 capable OS and some DX10 games. I'll probably upgrade if the G80 offers a substantial increase over current DX9 cards.

You should be fine then. The real mystery is if it'll be out by the time mine expires... :frown:

I'll wait for R600 and then I'll take my decision.

Anyway I can't imagine how high the very first G80 available will sell above MSRP, whatever MSRP it will be. Not really wiiling to pay $100 to $300 extra just because it's available "now". By the time R600 is released (not just on paper) then G80's MSRP will be a reality in stores.

Be careful with impulsive purchase guys ... careful about that, you might end up disappointed.

Wait and see, then take your decision based on your personal preferances. That's quite simple. Not because you have the money that you have to buy it you know ...

Will the new GPU still have native DirectX 9 support (not emulated)? What about OpenGL?

Did they decide to make OpenGL support native in Vista as well?

If it doesn't offer a substantial DX9 performance increase, no one will buy it. So I'm guessing it will wipe the floor with the current high-end offerings, especially at the $600+ price point.

i'm surprised no one quoted the source:

http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20061002A2007.html
Since DirectX 10 is positioned as a Vista-only solution, with presumably no ability to work with previous Windows versions, Nvidia's move to launch the GeForce 8800 in November should rather be considered as a symbolic step, said industry sources. So far, Microsoft only promised that Windows Vista will run DirectX 9.0, allowing to later upgrade it to DirectX 10 via Windows Update, the sources indicated. When Microsoft releases a DirectX 10-capable OS, ATI will perhaps catch up with the competition, the sources added.

EDIT: Bolding and underlining added after seeing the next poster's shock.

i guess DX10 games - "full" dx10, built from the ground up games - are gonna be '09 . . . at least. No wonder Crysis Devs are saying they won't bother with 'real' DX10 patchs for at least a year!
