Damnit, now I have to start saving $650
Sell X1900XTX, buy 7900GTO, step-up?

Why purchase the "G80" card when it will do nothing for DX10 until DX10 is actually released in Vista. Sit back and wait until the Radeon is out so you can at least compare which is best at DX10. I don't know why people have to jump at any new product to hit the market.... what for, bragging rights?

Well, for those of us with eVGA, the step-up time frame is a factor. I'd rather pay the ~$200 difference on each card (assuming an MSRP of $600) for a total expenditure of $400 for dual G80 cards than to wait and spend $500-600 for single card.

Have you seen the rumored G80 specs?
The fact that G80 is DX10 compliant is just a marketing gimmick as far as I'm concerned.
This card will smoke any DX9c card on the market. G80's bread and butter will be DX9.
DX10 performance will be dog slow probably, but the architecture of this card gives Nvidia the foundation for the real DX10 cards this time next year. Same for ATI and the R600.

Actually, the rumorued specs indicate that NV might have quite a good DX10 performance for years to come.
Just curious, but when does your step-up period end?

My first one ends on Nov 27. Not sure of the exact date of the second one, but it would be 2-3 weeks later.

The only reason I can think for Nvidia to release this card so soon before Vista is it's DX9 capabilities. I doubt DX10 performance will be up to R600 standards (who knows though) but that isn't really important until we get a DX10 capable OS and some DX10 games. I'll probably upgrade if the G80 offers a substantial increase over current DX9 cards.
Since DirectX 10 is positioned as a Vista-only solution, with presumably no ability to work with previous Windows versions, Nvidia's move to launch the GeForce 8800 in November should rather be considered as a symbolic step, said industry sources. So far, Microsoft only promised that Windows Vista will run DirectX 9.0, allowing to later upgrade it to DirectX 10 via Windows Update, the sources indicated. When Microsoft releases a DirectX 10-capable OS, ATI will perhaps catch up with the competition, the sources added.
