Almost everyone expected more from 7970 so that is not really surprising. If they set the clocks higher the cards would look a lot better, wonder why they didn't do that, obviously the headroom is there.

They sound pretty confident, leading to believe that they have something much better in the works but instead of talking trash, why not release some specs and launch dates?

It's PR spiel, what did you expect Nvidia to say? They blew our doors off and we have nothing to counter with.

Once Nvidia release something new then AMD can release something to beat it. I expected more from Nvidia like a new video card but they have released nothing. Actually I expect too much after every release I expect to be able to purchase the hardware that day lol

Why should they do it? If they can't deliver next week, they can talk.

I believe they are using all the rumors about Kepler to suprise the people.

So BigK in april?

I don't think that will happen. 3XX mm2 vs 5XXmm2 on the same process, GCN would have to be hugely more efficient than kepler for that to happen. GCN is a step backwards in terms of efficiency per mm2 compared to VLIV4, it's not that surprising, VLIV4 was focused solely on graphics and GCN is a jack of all trades. (compute and graphics)

Patiently waits for Kepler.

Honestly though if they don't release within the next month all this talk is worthless.

Start selling some 28nm cards first, THEN slam the competition.

NVIDIA needs to shut the fuck up and talk about its tech, not its competition's. The fact that 7970 talk is even escaping NVIDIA lips publicly smacks of desperation.

Kyle of HardOCP.

Truer words were never spoken. Talk is cheap nvidia, show us the big bomb or STFU.

This was an unofficial talk, no press release. Jeez. Blame a company for the words from one guy.

Let's get out our nvidia pre-fermi PR translators:

'Guys, we've got SFA ready, but trust us, we have something better coming. Just wait another six months and we'll deliver 15% more performance, it'll be worth it'

Sounds like desperation to me. Show us some specs at the least, better yet, let's have a board shot. All I get from this is it's another long wait for nvidia to get a release out the door.

The 7970 performance is indeed lower than many expected.

yet, i think most of the problem is the imature drivers..

Meh, its 20% faster at stock speeds, but when overclocked that figure jumps to 50-79% faster (see oc'ed benchmarks at hardocp or xbit) And the 7970 generally overclocks easily without a ton of voltage manipulation.

I think the main thing to take away from the great oc'ability is the fact that it scales so well - I don't think AMD is done with tahiti. This is a sharp contrast to the Cayman architecture which did not scale with clock speeds well at ALL... Its a near certainty that another part is coming in the future based on the same architecture. So all in all, the competition is good for us. If Kepler is awesome, I welcome it. I'll certainly buy that as well if its good - but I'm tired of hearing talk and marketing BS. Show us the goods NV

Am I the only one that believes Kepler will make the 7970 essentially a $550 mid range card?

The only one? No. In the vast minority? most likely.

But its already been rumored that AMD is going to release an 8970 as a quick refresh. My thinking is the 7970 was clocked where it is to be faster than a 580 by a decent amount (which it is), but not push it. As that then gives nVidia something to aim at. Its smarter to give yourself head room when you don't have any real competition, which AMD currently doesn't. But when Kepler eventually ships at some point in the future, then they have headroom to crank up the speeds for a refresh. And its been well proven that the 7970 has a lot of headroom.

It would be good for us consumers if Kepler did smack down the 7970 and it should. I don't care less either way tho as my rig is a toy that I just tinker with anyways. Not into gaming anymore so I could care less who has the latest/greatest/fastest gpu on the market.

On another note what would you expect Nvidia to say. Damn that 7970 is gonna be hard to beat? Were in trouble now? Holly S**t that things fast? You get the point.

If Kepler does smack down the 7970 then it's just a matter of how the prices fall in line. Does 7970 drop down? Does the Kepler competition cost more? Does AMD go full ninja price war?

My feeling on the price subject is both AMD and Nvidia should do something like crossfire/sli bundle on video cards. First one at full retail and the second one at something like a cost plus ??% available in a bundle package only.

On a second note GCN is a total new architecture for AMD. The odds of them getting it right the first time are slim to none. But it's a base for most likely many great cards to come. Looking at he progression from 38xx > 48xx >58xx > series it seems like unless the GCN architecture was close to being tapped the first time it'll have alot of growth potential in the future.

I would expect a company to not comment on their competitor's products? That Kyle quote above sums it up pretty good.

To answer this question, they should talk about thier own tech or STFU. Like Kyle at HardOCP said, talking about the competition -- while having your own product NOT on shelves reeks of desperation. Talk about your tech, release it, and STFU. End of.
