Nvidias' next card?

The way the nomenclature has been going, one would be led to believe that 9800 gtx/gts would be the next step but we all know why that cant happen. So do you think it will be announced 3rd/4th quater this year and will they take a totally unified approach?

The next step is going to be a 8800 refresh with die shrink and faster clocks.

Search Google for "geforce 8900" and you will get tons of links.
After that, the 9xxx Series will move in. Certainly already well along in development.

There never were Radeon 7600 or 7800s, nor were there ever Radeon 8600 or 8800s. There were Radeon 7000s, 7200s, and 7500s, as well as the 8500.

I could see a break coming in the naming system, much akin to ATI's X and HD nomenclature. Perhaps a Geforce 9 XX more in line with the early naming system

I think the next gen will be called the GeForce 9800, no reason why not. It's the "Radeon" in Radeon 9800 that is the tradmark. The model number doesn't mean so much.

...think about "300" in cars...

Lexus IS300
Chrysler 300M
Chrysler 300C
Nissan 300ZX

...just to name a few

I also don't think that the next gen will come out in Q3/4. I imagine that we will see a refresh and maybe a shrink of G80 sold as 8900GT(S/X), but I'd be surprised to see the G90 cards debut in 2007.

Based on all the rumors and historical nVidia refresh timeline, here are my bets:

Late April/early May - 8800 Ultra. Highest clocked G80. Watercooled? May be 1GB or DDR4 or both? Very limited qty. Designed to win/tie benchies against R600.
July-August - 8900 GTS/GTX. 8-9 months after the 8800. 80nm or 65nm? 700MHz+ clock. DDR4. More RAM too? 160 stream processors?

Yes he did, and you are still wrong... Nvidia is launching an 8500 GT midrange card, so there goes your theory

Wrong about what, my opinion that its a bad business move to name G90 or whatever the next core is a 9800, you seem to have come in on the ass end of the convo. What does a 8500 gt thats a midrange car have to do with an enthusiast/mainstream gpu named 9800 by Nvidia. You cant honestly say that naming a flagship gpu 9800 after another company has done so with much success would be wise. We may know the difference but I'm willing to bet that this does not happen, so your 8500 gt comment is irrelevant.

It has everything to do with it... If they use the 9800 number it will probably be

nVidia Geforce 9800 GTX

Compared to

ATi Radeon 9800 PRO


You think it will make any difference? The only thing they have in common is the number, nothing else... If anything people would remember how great of a card the 9800 PRO was and buy it because of the number, so it would never be a bad business move

I don't see the problem with the 9800 name....

Anyway, back to topic, in terms of the next generation of cards, GeForce 9 series probably won;t be out until Q2 2008 IMO - Nvidia release the new generation highend products roughly every 18 months or so. In between we're going to see 8900's for sure as a refresh in maybe another few months.

I think the refresh will be later than July/Aug... More like Sept/Oct IMO. I don't think you can look at historical timelines this year. You have a new version of DX, a new Windows OS, as well as 32-bit and 64-bit architectures. The driver development alone is a monumentous task considering that they have to come out with drivers for their current cards on all these platforms (single card and SLI) and still support their legacy products on Vista as well.

IMO, NVIDIA should concentrate on getting the 7/8 series (single and SLI) cards working under Vista as well as the 7 series does in XP before worrying about a 9-series. It's not as if they have any competition... Doing that alone would probably squeeze 10+% out of the 8800GTX as it is, and would probably help to close the gap between the X2900 and the 8800GTX.
