Cliff notes:
Nvidia partnered with a company called AEG.
AEG finds enthusiasts who will hype up nvidia products and work to sway users to purchase their products when they're in a limbo on which card to buy.
These "users" are given cards (likely reference cards) for their effort.
The users main roles:
COMMUNITY RELATIONS
- Fan site development and monitoring
- FSK (Fan Site Kit)
- Community management
- Message board monitoring and response
- Strategic seeding viral assets to ensure they are spread far and wide
- Optimization and re-purposing of existing content, creative and assets

Read the B3D thread for more details and information. The compnay will contact these people via PM/Email from various message boards and see if they'll accept. Upon acceptance, they are subjected to NDA's but are allowed to create hype about the product and convince users to hold off on their purchases. They will look for people who'll post endlessly and engage in any such converstaion on message boards. The users are are not generally hardcore gamers and you'll rarely see them discuss their own game play experience. Instead, they only promote bias material from across the net or release some very high level information that creates and sustains hype and slanders the competition. The general user base are much more inclined to listen to these people since they can relate better.

I saw that earlier and when I did a name popped into my head immediately. It would certainly explain a lot of things.

Where do I sign up? I get a free card for telling people the best card is the best? Coolness.

No need to get teary eyed. Just letting people be aware what sort of marketing tactics they might come across on even respected boards.

Btw, I seriously doubt a respectable site (such as this) would want such individuals on their message boards. If these people are allowed to do all this free publicity and free promotion for their company and get paid for it, why should other vendors have to pay?

Like any good salesman, their worth shines during rough times. They ride the wave during the good times and "work" when the going gets though.

Maybe this should have been PM'd to a mod instead?

But no.

You had to make a thread and hang the "Bring your own flame-thrower" sign from it.

Are you kidding me!? You don't think that the community deserves to know what sort of slimy marketing and propoganda they're being subjected to on a daily basis!?!?!?

If enough people do the wrong thing, it doesn't make it right all of a sudden. Nvidia and other companies that use such tactics should be publicized in their respective communities and then a user can decide for themselves what is the truth vs. what is being hyped up by such individuals. I'm sure you know the importance of "word of mouth." Word of mouth is generally regarded as a fair assessment from one person to another that can be accepted with confidence. These people sink to the lowest and try to attack that for self gain.

No need to PM a mod. This is public information, not breaking any NDA's, not accusing anyone and is directly related to the video card community. Just because an issue is sensitive doesn't mean it should be silenced.

Sorry, but you're gonna have to put your revolution on hold for a while.

Anybody who thinks that ATI doesnt do it is a fool. If you expect people to stop buying Nvidia products because of this, then we all better boycott computers all together. Along with almost every other commercially sold product.

People dont need you to persuade them on what video card to buy. People will make their own decisions based on their preferences and a smart person would go on official reviews rather than "word of mouth" anyways.

Let people make up their own minds. Let the Nvidiots be nvidiots and the fanATIcs be fanATIcs.

Anyways, that's my $0.02. I'm gonna leave it at that and go to bed. Tomorrow there will be 100 replies to this thread, so I have to get some rest!

Matt, if consumers were not highly susceptible to hype and propoganda, billions and billions of dollars would not be spent on marketing departments, companies such as AEG wouldn't exist, nvidia would have no need to partner with such a company and we would not be having this conversation.

Ah, so that's how Rollo got his video cards. Now we know who his "friend" at Nvidia is. That explains everything.

Do you have proof ATi does this as well? So far it's just your own assumption backed up with no facts at all.

Personally, i am sick of seeing actual trolling by certain users here that for interesting reasons seems to be considered acceptable here.
