Hi all,

I just started playing NWN. Is an awesome game thus far, but I am having problems.

At first, it wasn't that big of a problem. Didn't seem to happen often. But now it happens all the time.

I completed the first quest in getting the jail liberated. Now, I'm trying to do the beggers quarter quest. These problems crop up. Here they are:

Firstly, the game freezes a whole bunch whenever it loads a new area. Like when I'm going into a house, boom it freezes. Always at the same point also. A bit over 3/4 from loading. A little white dot appears in the top left corner. Not sure of its significance except it looks like it might part of the mouse. You know, when you have it mostly off the screen but can still see a tip.

Here is the other problem. When I then go and try to load a game, it sometimes says "cannot load moduel, it appears to be corrupted." This seems to happen when I am loading a game that was fairly close to where the freeze happened (like if I save near a door that leads to another map). So I'm saving all the time in different saves just so I don't have to go back way far to try again.

But now, I get the freezing problem 100% of the time at this one point. It is when I am trying to go to the lower level in the Serpent Cults house. It loads a bit over 3/4 of the way and freezes. I have tried about 6 times, no go. In the past with these freezes I would generally get through to the next level on the 2nd or 3rd try. Not here. Don't know what the corrolation would be though.

Here is my rig, and please ask any questions so I can get this solved. I really want to play this game and this weekend me and a friend were going to go adventuring if possible so if I can fix it that would be great. Thanks

Rig:

1.33ghz Athlon T-Bird
512mb PC 2100 DDR Crucial RAM
Leadtek Geforce 3 w/28.32 nvidia reference drivers
Hercules Game Theatre XP w/4.1 drivers
MSI K7 Master Motherboard
Windows XP Pro, all updates.

I tried messing around with the drivers. Went back farther to old drivers, and tried some unreleased beta drivers. Didn't help at all. In fact, the unreleased beta drivers made it worse. Couldn't even boot the game.

And, just to be more specific, the place that I am encountering where it is loading and always freezes is "Beggers Nest: Crypts"

BTW... I should also note that I just installed a new hard drive and am playing off of it (my other one just failed). So this is a fresh install and I haven't loaded any anti-virus, firewall, cd copying, or anything else that might conflict. Pretty much I installed the OS and was excited to play the game so it was the first thing I installed after all my updates.

Any help greatly appreciated.

I've been reading through stuff posted at the official NWN forums and boy, does the game come with tons of stability issues. Count yourself lucky that you can even play it, I can't even get to the main menu!

Have you tried the 1.19 patch yet? I'm not sure if it helps, and I'm still downloading it on my frickin' slow 56K modem, and maybe you can try installing the latest drivers for your video card, sound card and motherboard too.

Hope you get your problem solved soon.

I have tried new drivers for my sound card, video card, and motherboard. Still a no go (some made it worse so I had to revert to ones that worked).

I can't get the 1.19 patch yet because they haven't posted it for manual installation yet. I am connected through a proxy so I can't do the automatic update.

Hopefully it fixes stuff.

It is an awesome game just wish I could play it

I'm downloading off a link from www.avault.com. The URL to the download is http://nwdownloads.bioware.com/neverwinternights/patch/NWNEnglish1.19Patch.exe.

Thanks for the link!

Unfortunately, that didn't fix the problem

I give up. I've done everything that I can think of and it doesn't work (this includes sacrificing a chicken in the front yard ). I just hope a future patch fixes the problem.

Thanks for your help anyways

The white dot in the top left corner means it is working on one of your commands. Have you tried running the game in a lower graphics setting like Low or Fast. That will help determine if its graphics related. I heard that anti-aliasing setting turned up all the way can do this too.

Yah, I tried lower graphics, but I forgot about AA.

Thanks for the tip. Will go try that now

Well, I finally got my game to run after solving my dinput.dll problems. I've already finished the Peninsula, Beggar's Nest and Docks quests and have yet to encounter a single crash. Maybe I'm just lucky, or I haven't hit the ticking timebomb yet, but I hope you get your problem sorted out. If you haven't done so already, try browsing through the official NWN forums..... some of the posters have interesting solutions to solve crash bugs, and maybe one of their suggestions may help in your case.

Good luck!

Lowering graphics settings didn't work

Next step is to underclock my graphics card (worked for some people on the NWN forums).

Upgrading mine to 1.19 seems to have made things alot worse for me. Mine was pretty stable before but now its unplayable. I haven't tried single player yet but my friend and I were trying to play tonight for an hour and only had one game last more than 3 mins before locking up. On the one that didn't lock up my friend went to recall and everybody there was hostle and we hadn't even done anything yet. I read over on nwn forum on Friday and that seemed to be a fairly commen problem. Oh and then it locked up

Well I know it's always frustrating to hear this when you are having stability problems with an application, but I have had zero problems running NWN for probably 10-12 hours in the last 3 days. Not one crash. I have hosted multiplayer games also with no crashes (even alt-tabbed out of the application to check email, etc).

WinXP

Intel P4 2.2a
Gigabyte 8-IRXP
512 Megs SDRAM
Geforce 4 TI4400
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz

Same here. I have not had a single crash. I'm just trying to get used to this camera. I'd didn't have this much twisting and spinning in Dungeon Siege, but I'm getting a handle on it.

That's a pretty hefty overclock you have got on your rig.

I might suggest clocking to the default values for your RAM, CPU/FSB and Vid card then doing a clean OS install and I bet it will work fine.

Yeah, I tried that. Everything else has been running fine with the system like it is for the past year or so. Funny thing is, I brought the game over to my friends house and he had the same exact problem. I'm guessing the media is bad or something, I'm gonna write the company and see what they think.

Or take it back and exchange it where you bought it. Maybe you got a bad CD. Will it accept your key?

BTW, don't forget the hefty patch 1.19 which weighs in at 34 mb.
