Because we should be making it LESS desirable for people to come here illegally. They should not be able to get licenses without a valid visa, they should not get education and medical benefits, they should fear getting arrested for anything because they should be deported immediately upon discovering their illegal status. Next people like you are going to say, "Well, they're here, might as well give them Social Security numbers." Next thing you know, they're citizens. And since no one is doing a damn thing to actually patrol the borders, they're going to keep coming here and there will never be a point where we say 'Enough is enough.'

Actually, the US citizenry has already resoundingly stated that enough is enough. I love how this is always described as the "debate" over illegal immigration. There is no debate when most of America wants the same thing!

The US citizenry has done what? Here's some recent polling data from Pollingreport.com In there you'll see that while a majority of Americans do think that illegal immigration is a problem (although hardly an overwhelming majority), they are sharply divided over what to do about it. Hence, we have an immigration debate.

In fact, according to several of the Gallup polls there up to around 60% of Americans support exactly what you are so mad about, allowing illegal immigrants that are already here to become citizens.

Here's another paper by the Pew Reserch center. The most interesting part of it (at least to me) is the polls that show that areas with more immigrants living in them are actually far less concerned about illegal immigration then those areas where few immigrants live. What this tells me is that a good part of the anti immigrant hysteria in this country is coming from people who are largely ignorant of the reality of it.

Either way both of these surveys show a highly divided American public, so that should put to rest the idea that most Americans "want the same thing".

I'm well aware illegals will continue driving without auto insurance, never said otherwise, I said we'd see an increase in auto insurance purchases by illegals. And this law potentially leading to more illegals in NY would be next to impossible to prove, as we already know the NY illegals population will continue to grow regardless of the law ever becoming reality. But yeah, sure, I'll bet. Not that you'll be around to man up.

WOW!!! DRIVERS LICENSES!!! OMFGZ!!! They can have DRIVERS LICENSES!!!!!????!!!????!!!

If a drivers license was just this (like in many European countries) not many would object. However, the point you missed is that a drivers license is also an ID, used everywhere. You need one to board an airplane, for example. Illegal immigrants have broken the law once (or many times), and giving them a state ID rightly infuriates people.
