I might be visiting the big apple for my first time ever, pretty excited even though I am not sure yet if I am going. My curiosity though has me thinking, what kind of jacket works for the weather there. I have medium to semi heavy jackets, but one is suede and the other is wool. Isn't suede bad if it snows? I know my wool one works, just gets a little funky smelling when it gets wet. I have gloves and a scarf also, just looking to buy a proper jacket if need be, also I REALLY want to try NY pizza. So chime on in you jacket experts, thx and have a shitty day.

Die witch !!

I'd go with the wool myself, if it was a choice between either or.

I personally avoid suede at any rate, it does not have a good survival factor in my personal experience.

I keep thinking about the Seinfeld episode when Jerry buys a suede jacket and it gets ruined. My wool coat is like this one.

That would be good. Just make sure you have some layers underneath it and a scarf and gloves. A wool sweater and socks would be good with it. I wouldn't spend a lot of time outside in that but it should be fine for walking around a bit. It can get seriously cold in NY in February. Then again, it could be pretty mild too.

It's New York, a Hefty Bag over a flannel lumberjack shirt is perfectly appropriate for almost any occasion.

I did fine in a peaceful coat and a sweater or.somryhing underneath almost the whole winter there. Only broke out my snow jacket when it got into the 20s, but that was rated to like negative 20. February might be into the 20s, though Jan is usually only that cold. Pea coat should be fine.

Several layers are better than one heavy jacket. In any case, wool is better than suede.

Especially in the northeast. In February you can have anything from 60 and sunny to blizzards. And you can have both in a 24 hour period. Wardrobe flexibility is important, you have to be able to handle warm, cold rain and snow in the same trip. A long waterproof overcoat is best and then some lighter stuff to wear underneath it on cold days.

Filson makes very nice, but very spendy outdoorwear. If you have the cash to burn, and don't mind rugged looking gear, their stuff is about the best for being outside in all kinds of weather.

I've heard many horror stories about suede in general being destroyed in one outing.

I guy I used to work with decades ago had a pair of Blue Suede Shoes that were utterly destroyed walking into on bar in Gainseville when he went up for a Gators game.

But that was a party bar, they had people with firehoses and shit hanging out in the rafters and it was all tiled from what I was told.

From the output of many UF graduates I've seen, they are more interested in partying in college rather than learning much, but I doubt that would run the full gamut of graduates.

My 30th is in Feb. What are you bringing me??? See you in the

A kick in the butt. If the trip does happen, it will be Superbowl weekend, the same weekend as the CanJam audio show. The show is the reason I would be there. Its at the Marriott in Times Square. I bought the Costco jacket, but I will still look at other options.

Only if it's black.

And OP, the most important parts are gloves, scarf, and socks.

What kind of socks? I don't actually have anything that's for cold weather. I just have my dress socks, casual socks, then white ankle and no show socks. Gloves and scarf are covered.

I went back east in December about 6 years ago after my Dad passed away and it was 8 degrees when my sister picked me up at the Albany airport. I was wearing a wool pea coat, jeans, socks, shoes, t-shirt and sweater and I swear the cold hit me so hard when we walked out of the airport to her car. It was one of those cold windy nights where the wind just blows right through you and chills you to your core. Next day I bought some decent gloves and a scarf because it was fucking cold. Then 2 days later it was raining with temps in the 50s.

Is it better to take a flight that has a stop compared to non stop? I would think a break would be good, unless they make you stay on the plane. My longest flight has been from So Cal to N Cal.

Wool socks as suggested. Ankle socks are worthless in winter unless you have good boots.

As far as flights, remember a short layover can be a curse. It sounds good to have 15 minutes between flights, until you're in O'Hare and on the other side of the airport and it takes half an hour from gate to gate if you ran. Non stop is ideal, but sometimes it's a lot more expensive.
