Wool socks as suggested. Ankle socks are worthless in winter unless you have good boots.

As far as flights, remember a short layover can be a curse. It sounds good to have 15 minutes between flights, until you're in O'Hare and on the other side of the airport and it takes half an hour from gate to gate if you ran. Non stop is ideal, but sometimes it's a lot more expensive.

Non stop seems about double the price, the layovers from my brief browsing shows 50 min as the lowest. John Wayne to Florida, Florida to NY.

Definitely recommend a a non-stop flight if you can swing it. If you can't, probably get one with a longer layover than you think is necessary. 30 minutes is too short -- most planes start boarding 30 minutes ahead of takeoff. Nothing wrong with sitting at an airport bar for a drink.

So Southwest? (I think they're one of the few airlines out of John Wayne, right?) You definitely want to be at your gate 30 minutes before boarding so you don't get stuck with a middle seat in the last row. That said, they generally only have you in one terminal on Southwest, so 50 minutes might be enough. It'll be way less time to get off the plane and use the restroom than you think though.

It was either American or United, one of them stops in Colorado, the other Florida. I don't recall what South West does.

That time of year I vote for AA via PHX into JFK. Stay away from LGA. Most of the United flights either stop in DEN or ORD which if you don't have to go through during the winter I wouldn't.

If this is your first time to NY/NYC area - I highly recommend NOT flying into LGA. Fly into JFK. It's much easier to get into Manhattan from JFK than LGA, assuming you're staying in/around Times Square for that show.

When you land at JFK, no matter what airline you're on, you'll grab your bags and look for signs for the AirTrain. The AirTrain was recently installed and it's literally a train that goes around JFK stopping at every terminal, ending at either Howard Beach or Jamaica. You'll want to hop on the train that will be stopping at Jamaica station, which will allow you to hop on the LIRR right into Penn Station (33rd Street).

The AirTrain is a $5 trip, and then you would buy a one-way ticket from Jamaica Station to Penn, which IIRC is like ~$9 (assuming off-peak hours). That will bring you right into Penn, 32/33 Street. Once you're there ... the tourist in you may come out or may not. There's not much to see, but when you get up to street level you'll immediately see "World's Most Famous Arena" in Madison Square Garden. You'll be right in the heart of NYC, so you may opt for walking from Penn to Times Square area (~10 blocks) depending on the weather of course. If you've got the thin, southern blood and can't handle the deep freeze, you could take the 1/2/3/N/Q/R from Penn up to TS. I'd recommend the walk though, you'll definitely want to see as much as possible.

Let me know if you have any questions and I can try to help....

If he can't handle the cold, you don't want to take the N/Q/R to Times Square, as that requires a 1 Ave walk outside from Penn to Herald Square. Better off with the A/C/E from Penn.

Another option from Jamaica, instead of the LIRR, depending on where you're staying, is the E train.

As far as clothing goes, layers. Since the weather can vary greatly like peeps are saying, which is true (I'm in western mass), you need to be able to shed layers when it's warm, and put them back on if/when it's cold

Grab a pair of thermal underwear

Regular tall socks are fine, and have extra to change into. Nothing is worse than wet socks in the winter.

long sleeve shirts, etc...

Much of this is based on what you will be doing, gonna be outside for extended periods? More layers.

In all honesty I am not even sure how the flight thing is going to work. I might not even be buying the ticket, the company I am going with might handle all of that. They have to pay my expenses, so they fork over the money of course, just not sure if I have to make my own arrangements. IMHO, the best situation would be for me and the other guy to both leave out of LAX on the same flight, have him take care of everything and just tell me what time. I only asked about the flight thing if I indeed have to travel on my own.

I went back east in December about 6 years ago after my Dad passed away and it was 8 degrees when my sister picked me up at the Albany airport. I was wearing a wool pea coat, jeans, socks, shoes, t-shirt and sweater and I swear the cold hit me so hard when we walked out of the airport to her car. It was one of those cold windy nights where the wind just blows right through you and chills you to your core. Next day I bought some decent gloves and a scarf because it was fucking cold. Then 2 days later it was raining with temps in the 50s.
Yeah, down into single digits the pea coat isn't enough, even with a sweater underneath. I walked our dogs one morning in January and it was 6 degrees. That was frigid. Beanie and parka weather for sure, although I didn't like wearing gloves much while walking the dogs, too hard to control them. That said, never in my entire time there did I ever wear anything more than plain old jeans and tube socks, even into the single digits. Feet and legs would get cold and numb but I was usually walking around during enough that it didn't bother me much.

Really lost my tolerance quickly after moving back to socal. Walking the HB pier in dec. With a t-shirt and sending pics back to friends on the east coast with a Margarita in hand made it worth it

Am I losing my mind, or is finding a flight out of NY at night not a reality? I am talking 8pm in that area.

Newark Airport is also not a bad option. You can take the Air Train from the airport to Newark Penn Station and then grab an NJ Transit train from there into NYC Penn Station. Or there are the PATH trains as well at Newark Penn Station - and those can take you to World Trade Center or up to 33rd street in Midtown. I flew out of there 17 times a year for 2 years for business, all over the country, and almost always found direct flights. It's a United Airlines hub so lots of options.

Since you are out of So Cali, buying a warm and expensive coat, gloves and scarf is a waste of money for a short trip. Go with layers and buy some cheap gloves and knit hat. Buy some Totes for your shoes, if you don't have boots.

The coat was $30, I already have a scarf, gloves and even thermal underwear if need be. I spend the month of December outside at night for the Xmas lights in my neighborhood, so I spend some time in Socal cold weather, I know its not the same cold as NY, but I use to ski, so I have spent time in cold weather, its just been a very long time.

If you're trying to get back to SNA the problem is that the arrivals curfew starts at 11PM and connection time penalty. Plenty of direct flights to LAX in late evening

Still finding flights coming back no departures later than 6pm-ish.

AA, Jet Blue, Virgin, Alaska, and Delta all have direct flights departing JFK in late evening for LAX.

You can't leave later than about 5PM from NYC to get to Orange Country unless it's a direct (expensive) out of Newark since you have to connect and that time pushes any arrival beyond the 11PM arrival restriction (due to county mandated noise abatement) at John Wayne.

That might be it then, I was looking up LGA not JFK.

You won't find many cross-country flights out of LGA thanks to Port-Authority restrictions on long-haul flights originating at LGA.

Thats what I have noticed, JFK has much more of a selection. Further drive to the hotel though, so you gain one thing and lose another heh.

NY sucks when it comes to Winter. I suggest steering clear.

I cant control the dates of the audio show, so just because its winter doesn't matter to me. I wonder though if the weather might make them change the date of it in the future.
