That's absolutely heartless, putting people on luxury ships in the Bahamas for the winter!!

Right when you thought the East River could be any more polluted.

Why not just let them stay in the thousands of empty cargo containers they have stacked up everywhere?

I've heard people suggest using oil tankers for prisons. Run them aground, retrofit the interior with plumbing & cells, & call it good. Cheap (single hulled oil tankers are being retired), secure (like anybody's getting through the walls), and spacious.

Hell, dock it on riker's island. if the guards don't kill them, the water will.

Sink it?? Nah. I was thinking more of outfitting the ship with mikes and cameras and cutting it adrift. Talk about reality TV!

now that is one Survivor show everyone will watch (if it was floating prison on oil tanker, the better. it would be like real-life OZ)

NYC did have several prison barges but they were never used. I remember there were all sorts of protests saying it was inhumane and a throwback to merry old England. Mostly it was the NIMBYists that didn't want to docked on the Hudson River. I can see someone saying the same about putting the homeless on old ships.

yeah, put a pony on that boat and those kids would be set for life :Q

Seriously, that doesn't seem like the kind of enduring solution that we should be paying for. More money needs to be spent making sure that any of those people who are able and willing to work get another chance. And another. Whatever it takes to get them working, and spending money, and improving the economy in general. We need to spend less money throwing people in prison for smoking pot and more money educating and encouraging a strong work ethic.

Tell me about it. I'm taking an intro law class at my high school (ah, my one easy class), and we visited our county court this week. According to the judge, around 80% of the cases in our county are drug related. All those tax dollars spent to protect people from themselves. We could be spending that money on education, researching new discoveries (weening ourselves off oil anyone?), or giving that money back to the public, where it would be used the best. But no, we can't have anyone smoking dope or poping some pills. We have to save them from themselves by incarcerating them. I fail to see the logic.

OK. I put my ass out here for risk of flaming by the misinformed yet again.

1. It has been 9 years since I have lived there, worked there, paid taxes there, and hated being there.
2. I was born and raised in NYC. Took the #2 Subway Train (look it up, nerds) from the Bronx to NYC proper (i.e. Manhattan) 5 to 6 days a week
3. NYC has one of the worst homeless problems in the USA. They are everywhere. In the trains. In the trains stations. In the parks. In the alley you walk to throw away your garbage, etc.
4. This is for you snobby idiots in Manhattan who think I'm lying. You go to lunch. You go to Mickey D's or the Greek Deli on the corner to get your Gyro in pita. Do they or do they not: the bums!!! While your sitting at the little one-foot-square table w/that cute coworker, they come and hit you up for money, right? They stink like they sh1t their pants last YEAR and haven't realized it yet. AM I RIGHT?
5. You know I am.
6. NYC is evil. It sucks. I'll never go back

Oh, I'm sorry...did I digress? The whole point is: YES. Put them on the ships (voluntarily, of course) and whatever happens, happens.

The rest of you. Don't you damn dare say a word. Living in Cornrowbumfvck Iowa does not give you the knowelege to even COMMENT on such a situation. Move to, live in, work in, and commute to NYC...for a year. THEN you can talk.

Until you have danced and drank with the devil, you haven't earned the right to talk about it.
