Cities are the citadels of a country. It is imperative that crime is at lows in cities, people don't care for rural areas. Obviously, rural areas will have higher crime.

But cities are the lifeblood of a country.
Dafuq you mean "obviously rural areas will have higher crime?"

So you must be very concerned that right wing cities have such high crime?

They are very few right wing cities. Yes, there may be rightwingers living in cities (The Gottis, Trump, etc.), but very few cities in America are right wing.

Even Salt Lake City in heavily Republican Utah leans left.

This is the price average Americans have to pay because people can't contain self-control and not commit crimes in the subway.......

I'm not a criminologist, but crime needs to be contained as possible, so we don't have to be subjected to random searches.

You didn’t answer my question. What do you think about right wing OKC having twice the murder rate of NYC?

It would seem to me that OKC should get more liberal governance to bring down their crime rate, no?

I can speak for myself as a white guy and for a shit ton of white people I know in these parts, and which I meet constantly, we actually like the diversity here. It's part of the perk of living here in fact. We like being around diversity, and that includes minorities, and also gay people that can be themselves and not be afraid to hide it in some red state shithole. It's literally one of the amenities of living in or near NYC.

So racist Getty Road, whether a Republican or Russian, honestly it's hard to tell them apart these days, which should say something, go drink vodka and play in traffic. Wear a helmet, make it more fun.

I lived in NYC until I was in my teens and NYC is diverse, which is okay......but NYC is judged on the crime rate. Yes NYC is not like it was in the 80s, but it should be a crime free paradise.

It's very sad and you can't even get police hired. They're finally are making it a crime to do drugs in public again, so we will see. Pandemic made people cray cray over there, but the drug situation is completely out of hand. Even out in my exurb any wooded area within reach of the towns Silverdale or Bremerton have tents here and there. You may be surprised to hear this from me but life sentences for dealing fentanyl are quite in order.
And the light rail in Seattle isn't half way built out yet and there have been 3 deaths either on the train or in close proximity to the stations so far this year.
We lived just outside the city limits of Silverdale for ~7 years. The homeless population is getting out of hand everywhere. Drive up/down the I5 corridor...it's tent cities at almost every interchange between...Eugene and the Canadian border. (from what I hear...I haven't been past Everett in decades)

Please point us to a major city that meets that description. From what Nick (you all remember Nick1985) says, Vietnam is fairly crime free...but it's a strict Communist country.

We won't have less crime until we start to mitigate some of the rampant consumer capitalist traits of our economy. Some of them have to be dialed back - so we can get things done .from wage and income inequality, to healthcare, to daycare, to housing.

Eliminating the Republican party would be a good start though, as they are mostly pure evil at this point. Nothing can be done until that

I'm not 100% on board with the wage and income equality stuff. The person who flips burgers isn't worth as much as a banker/stockbroker/architect/doctor. They all have serious investments in the education that helps them earn much higher pay. I'm 100% with you on healthcare...in a rich nation like ours, there's no fckn way a person should go bankrupt over a medical issue...or have to choose between seeing a doctor/dentist and eating/paying the light bill, etc.

I'm Not really sure in what worlds anybody including myself has proposed that regular essential workers get paid as much as doctors and lawyers. It's like you're creating an argument to argue against. You should get away from that I think you're smarter than that typical capitalist argument - You want unskilled labor to get paid the same as doctors? I mean that's not even in The ballpark of the discussion.

The fact is we need to have a living wage for all jobs.

Burger flippers and doctors I mean come on man

Surround a liberal with enough external threat real or imagined and he or she will move to conservative opinions fast. That is all this hype about crime is intended to do, disrupt piece of mind and agitate. I long ago lost count of the ends of life on earth I have lived through. But I do see that Trump is a monster, a real and credible threat. We all need to do what we can to see that he does not win the election.

YOU are the one who brought up "income inequality." That's never happened, never will. Different jobs require different skills, education, and training. The more intense, the better the pay. As for the "living wage" bullshit...minimum wage jobs were not supposed to pay good enough to support a family, buy a house, or even get ahead. Want better pay? Learn better job skills. What's a living wage in one place won't rent a studio apartment in others...Living wage in NYC would probably rent a 3 bedroom house in many parts of the country.

I don't know, man. I'm hearing that workers at McDonald's here in California have recently been showing up at work driving Teslas. Next think you know they'll be parking motorhomes in my two acre front yard and charging doctors rent.

You mean to tell me that people willing to sell the precious time they have here in this Garden of Eden of a paradise squandering it for a bigger paycheck that can't buy them one extra moment of time? No wonder the world looks so nuts. Well do I remember thinking of a life in corporate America playing office politics and opting for a life as a nobody. Remember what Nasrudin said. "Oh my Beloved, Everywhere I look it appears to be Thou."

That still doesn't mean that doctors and restaurant workers get paid the same.

Many of our most pressing domestic issues are basically a direct result of restrictive housing policy. The layer of housing (boarding houses, SROs, etc) that used to catch people before they went out on the street is all but gone. We don't even build enough market rate stuff in most of the country.

But you can't build micro apartments/SROs/denser apartments because tHaT's iNhUmAnE or I would never want to live in one or my preferences are obviously the same as everyone else's and people "prefer" single family homes because tradeoffs don't exist. /S

Common feedback from people I see when a development is proposed is that they don't have enough 2-3 bedroom units "for families because we like families not icky single renters" and have too many studios/1brs. Few families with kids are going to pay that kind of rent for an apartment instead of like a townhouse or a sfh so any units bigger than a 1br end up split between roommates. If there were a market for them at market prices developers would build them in the first place.

I see the excuses like not enough "family sized" units as a way for people to create a veneer for their true objections, that they really don't want anything built. They also don't understand that unrelated people might stop crowding into existing multi bedroom units if they could rent singles or doubles on their own. Also, these people object to things like townhouses being built in their neighborhoods too.

As for the lack of multi bedroom units in new construction compared to older style buildings: let's thank modern US building codes for that. We largely don't allow narrow, single stair buildings, so we end up with deep floor plate, double loaded corridor buildings that have crappy floor plans, particularly for families, and end up with few 3 bedroom units because of the way the floor plates work (and how the projects could pencil out).
