How do you know what her clothing budget for her kid is? How do you know how her apartment is set up and if it is amenable for hanging clothes drying lines in it? How do you know she has a land line as well?

Like I said, you're speaking from ignorance and filling in the gaps in the story with your own invented circumstances so you can be outraged.

If you're pinching every penny, you set up your apartment to allow a line. If you're lazy, you go to the laundromat and spend your welfare checks there.

Look around you. In severe economic recessions, a six month unemployment stint is not uncommon. It isn't "living off the system" when there simply may not be any jobs in your area/region. Besides, IIRC you do have to show proof that you are attempting to find employment.

As was already pointed out, the person in the article had only been out of work for 1 year, not five. Those who have experience working with the poor know that it is very common for a poor person to have a full-time job and still be well below the poverty level for their given area, especially if they have kids. These are the working poor, which are largely ignored in America when it comes to policy.

Simply applying at McDonalds doesn't work for a number of reasons. For starters, those are the kind of jobs that many work at while still needing welfare assistance. Second, the job market is flooded in these areas by people who are overqualified and need something just to make ends meat for a while. Such is economic recession.

Finally, moving is not always an option, especially if you have kids. Moving costs both time and money which the poor in many cases do not have. If you are single it is much easier. Poverty is a trap which is very difficult to get out of. Those who are truly 'stuck' in both a physical and literal sense aren't necessarily that way through their own fault. This is one of the most common misconceptions when it comes to the poor. Sure, there are some who are, but overall this is not the case.

You know, I actually have experience doing this. I have washed clothes in a sink before, and set them out to dry. A few observations: Machine washing is far more efficient in terms of time (even if you just sit on your arse reading a magazine), far more effective in terms of actually getting clothes clean (modern conveniences - progress!), and maybe even cheaper overall in terms of detergent (you will inevitably use more if you have to periodically drain/refill said sink or just to compensate for said inefficiency of handwashing lots of clothes). Even people in the third world have actual mechanical washing tubs or washboards to aid in washing clothes which our poor do not. This whole line of argument, railing against them for using a laundromat, seems to be a strawman. Most people here wouldn't begrudge the poor using a laundromat on occasion...

There needs to be some kind of criminal charge for being on welfare more than a year. Some kind of physical punishment or hard labor. Something to show these leaches that what they are doing is wrong and should stop immediately.
