I hate to be an a$$, but does anyone in law-enforcement find this to be BS?

No, in NYC there is a special number you can call for situations like this. It's posted in virtually every subway station.
"See something suspicious? Call etc."

I live in NYC & I have seen the number, but the fact that the OP said that the cop told him to call this number instead of making the report him/herself doesn't sound strange to you? If I contacted my local PD and said, "Hey, I noticed something suspicious," and the PO told me to call this number, I'd be pissed as h*ll!

True it does seem strange, but a lazy cop + a specialized number would probably lead to that. The OP was basically doing the cop's job for him, and since the cop probably wouldn't've done it anytime soon (or maybe forgotten) maybe it was better the OP did it.

i have a similar story to this that happened to me in tampa, florida

i was about to board an american airlines flight and it was about 10 minutes before boarding time and i was just sittin there watchin people walk by etc etc just to pass the time

then i notice this "muslim-looking guy" but he was wearing like regular clothing not muslim turban or anything like that....and he was just sittin there alone looking out the window at the plane...i didint think twice i just kept looking at random people and thinking about my trip

then they started boarding the plane...and i notice this guy takes out a phone...okay thats nice still didint think twice about it....they board everyone and i was about to get on the plane (last person) and i glance over at this guys phone while walking over and i notice he was taking pictures on the phone of every1 outside the window like i guess the people fueling the plane/loading bagage and gettin it ready and stuff (he was like zooming in and i was looking at each pic being taken so dont say that he was just playing with it and taking pics or w.e)....and then i realized he wasnt boarding the plane (you needed a boaridng pass to be where we were....)...so hes just this dark skinned arab guy, at the boarding area, trying not to stand out, NOT getting on the plane (sketchiest part), taking pictures of stuff being loaded onto it and the peolpe getting on....which really freaked me out esp the part that he wasnt gettin on the plane

so i told my dad about what i saw (im only 17 so i wanted his opinion on what to do) and then we went up and told the guy who worked for american airlines, and he said ok thanks alot and called up security and they were on their way to ask him some ?s and then got on the plane and had a safe trip...i still dont know what happened to the guy but hopefully he wanst doin anything suspicious

idk if i did the right thing but i figure better be safe than sorry

That's really creepy... him being non-responsive is probably what led you to telling authorities.

If he actually came up with some sorta explanation that made sense I might not have done anything.

The cop that gave me the number was responding to an injury or illness (not sure which) somewhere in the station, so he gave me the phone number to call.

is anyone else getting tired of this 'politically correct' crap all over???
15 of the 19 who pulled 9/11 were Saudi's. all 19 were muslims. all were funded by money from muslim charities.

you want me to pretend that I don't suspect ppl just because they're Muslim??? Hell yes I do... and I don't apologize for it

a muslim guy even breathing is 'suspicious' i assume?
Muslim people have sayings/prayers they say multiple times, usually 33. Thats what the counter is for(most people use the beads). They dont talk while they say them. So if its suspicious that someone is using a counter, maybe its just maybe not a terrorist and has a valid reason? Get to know various cultures and people before you assume.

you did the right thing. THAT'S the type of vigilance that can make our country safer.

EDIT: "Muslim people have sayings they say multiple times, usually 33. Thats what the counter is for(most people use the beads)." Further part of their nutball rituals?

reciting prayers is a nutball ritual? I guess people of all religions fall into that category

I can definitely understand why he did it. I'm not racist or prejudiced or anything, but some comments on here are just stupid. I realize that it seems wrong to be afraid of muslims or "muslim-looking" people only since 9-11 but it's the common reaction due to what happened. People had no reason to be afraid before 9-11, and some are b!tching because people are only afraid now? Well what do you want them to do? Embrace everyone? I'm not alarmed when I see a Muslim person personally but I can see the reasoning behind others' fears.

btw, OP, you did the right thing. It doesn't matter the ethnicity or anything, someone with a clicker especially in these times on a subway definitely seems suspicious.

Yeah ... It was. Maybe I was mistaken what the guy was doing. I'll be the first to admit that I'm not familiar with muslim customs, nor do I hold them against them for their beliefs or rituals. I stand by my behavior. I asked the guy twice what it was for, and he didn't give me an answer that I was comfortable with, so I took what I thought were appropriate steps. Like I said, I hope my suspicious were wrong, but I'd do it again if I were placed in the same situation.

Yes, you did. Thank you. If all decent people in this country do the same thing, we can beat those bastards at their own game.

I have one beer left in my fridge; if I could get it to you right now, I would.

I would have, especially if he spoke with a German Accent!

Do the prayers have to be recited at certain times?
I understand a person not wanting to be stopped when in
the middle of them but is it normal to do them on a subway
where people might be observing and wondering what the
person is doing?

Hey, way to go - you did the right thing. I noticed an african american doing this once and felt insanely uneasy so, guys, please don't call the O.P. racist. The guy turned out to be an engineer of sorts (I spoke to him kindly and explained my concern and he showed me official looking documents)... We live in a dark time so it's a good idea to keep an eye or two out for odd behavior.

I would have done the same too. I might have grabbed him by the scruff of his neck and dragged him outta the train and onto the platform.

With all the police officers in Grand Central, the officer gave you a number to call, instead of radioing in for assistance? If that's truly the case, you need to contact the media and tell this story!

Maybe an off the wall thought, but could it be a test?

Perhaps the Homeland Security (or who ever is in charge of this sort of thing) has agents floating around, dressed in various levels of suspicious attire performing various levels suspicious acts, to test how JohnQPublic would react to certain situations and who would be notified.
