Do your job or GTFO. I guess they've been choosing to GTFO. That's better for NYC and the NYPD in the long run. Gives them a chance to hire better people.
I don't know about that, some feel less qualified people will enroll or apply.

Except the reason many are leaving is because of the budget cuts which are already shrinking the force and leaving those who remain with unsustainable workloads. So I don't get the "do your job or gtfo" remark. I don't think you'd say that to any other class of worker in similar a situation, where they are not paid by the hour but had their hours massively increased.

Not to nitpick too much, but being dead doesn't mean they're useful. Kinda opposite actually.
They were sadly called to handle a domestic violence issue, and the idiot shot and wounded them both, both dying.

I personally don't know why anyone would do this job, it is what it is.

This is going to give the GOP ammo in 2024.

Failure or success of local police forces has virtually nothing to do with the executive branch. You may as well just blame Democrats for the weather and run on that platform (would probably still be more successful than their current non-platform).

True, but why do we have rightwing cops in Congress like D'Esposito and Stauber, etc.? Why is former NYPD Deputy Inspector Alison Esposito running for Congress?

Because since Black Lives Matter emerged, policing has been a national issue as they had wanted it to be. Esposito, etc. see BLM as a threat to the policing they feel brought crime down since 1991 and they want to run to make a statement...

The problem is they don’t do their job to begin with.

Wut? Cops get overtime and can make a huge amount of money doing it.

In what sense? I mean, like all of them?
The NYPD is so institutionally corrupt that any attempt to provide oversight results in them deliberately not doing their jobs in order to punish the mayor.

While I get your point there is a larger issue in that all the police unions need to be disbanded and frankly a large percentage of the NYPD has to be replaced due to corruption issues. I don’t see attrition as a big issue here as frankly the service needs to be majorly attritted.

I don't see how attrition is going to help, because there is no guaranty that only bad cops leave. Good ones are just as likely. If they really do have so many bad police, they need to reform their recruiting policies.

I agree, but frankly every time I see ‘NYPD quitting because the work is too hard’ stories I am reminded that almost no one has a job as coddled as they do.

In Philadelphia, from deep and prolonged personal experience, I'd say a sadly disproportinate number of them.

That said, and I do need to say this, I have met any number of truly fine people working as police. I wouldn't want their job for love nor money. I couldn't do it. Don't have the temperament.

I can't say I'm too concerned. If you look at every major metro center in the US, almost all of them would report issues with cop recruiting. Eventually the laws of supply and demand amongst other market reverberations should fix the market.

I also think the association with number of police officers a metro area has and the frequency of crime is a pretty poor one.

I dunno, how many former police officers ran for Congress prior to say, 2010? I'm guessing more than a handful.
