Everyone around was like: Put the dog out of its misery. The cops left this dog wiggling and flaying, blood coming out of its mouth. They shot it in front of a public bus.

It's just the dog of a homeless person. Probably deserved to get killed. Thank God NYPD is protecting America. I guess they thought macing it would calm it down.

I thought NYPD changed their policy on shooting dogs back in the 90's because they were hitting so many bystanders by accident.

Cops are paid to protect people, not viscous street dogs.

Good job NYPD.

This is common. They are allowed to do what they just did.

If you try to assault an officer they can shoot you. Duh.

I feel bad for the homeless guy, can it get any worse? The only thing that he had left was that dog.

Dog was agressive. Dog got maced. Dog attacked officer. Dog got shot.

Good for the police. They did the right thing.

The people who want to whine and bitch about everything and make up shit should just shut the hell up. They're agitators who help no one.

I can't help feel sorry for the dog, but there was nothing wrong with what happened here.

The shallow heartlessness displayed by several posters in this thread saddens me.

His owner was passed out, and the dog was just protecting him. That dog didn't have to die. That poor homeless bastard didn't deserve to have his closest companion on this earth shot to death.

This could and should have been handled better. Why wasn't animal control called?

We see this dog outside of KFC every day. It’s usually a nice dog. [The dog and its owner] don’t bother anyone. Everyone in this restaurant [Baohaus] knows this. If it was a cop from the neighborhood, they would know that guy. He’s there every day.

Working in an emergency veterinary hospital for the last 9 years I have seen numerous, perfectly sweet family dogs come in with gunshot wounds from police. One case, according to the owner was inside the house when an officer came to knock on the door on a non-threatening call of some kind not even related to any criminal investigation or complaint, the officer shot the dog through the closed screen door.

Sometimes officers would bring the dogs in themselves because they felt bad for the poor animal after shooting it. I once met an officer, a huge 6'8" black guy who was afraid of cats. What the fuck are you going to protect if you are that size with multiple lethal and non-lethal weapons on your belt and body armor and you're scared of a freaking cat?

Don't even get me started on the incompetent police dog handlers and their poorly trained attack dogs.

What does it say about the state of our society that the article has one sentence about the police slaying a man and 8 paragraphs about shooting the dog. Nothing good thats for sure.

The greatness of a society and its moral progress can be judged by the way it treats its animals.

Nowhere does it say that the dog bit anyone.

Comment from the link-

I had just crossed the street and was a witness to what happened. I did not see any mace or any other spray being used on this dog, though that may have happened earlier. I saw an elderly woman approach the dog, and heard police requesting that she keep her distance. She continued, and the dog approached her and bit her leg. I do not think that it was being hostile, but it was clearly biting her. She reacted to being bit, and the police shouted at her to move away. This is when the dog turned to the police and approached them. I can't really blame the dog, because it's a dog and it has no clue what was going to happen, At the same time, I didn't see any mace being sprayed, and I found it difficult to view this as an abuse of power when I saw it. I was very upset, and really I feel that this woman was to blame. It made no sense to approach this dog, because it was barking at people, and the cops were yelling at her to keep her distance. Within 20 seconds of the shot being fired, I heard additional sirens, so maybe animal control was on the way or something, I didn't stick around. It just makes me feel sick that this whole thing could have been avoided if the dog was given more space.

Comment from the link-

Although that one comment is quite specific and does sound believable in and of itself, it not only has not been corroborated by anyone else as yet, it has been questioned and outright contradicted by several others.

For example, right in the article itself, nearby restaurant owner Eddie Huang, a real, identifiable, accountable and well known individual (as opposed to the anonymous internet poster calling himself AteBall whom you quote), says:

Another one of our employees was 10 feet away from it, and he said what happened was: The cops tried to mace the dog, when they tried to mace it, the dog lunged at [the cop]. And this is the same homeless guy we see outside of KFC every day. He never bothers anybody. Today, the guy was passed out. Other people were saying he OD’d or whatever, but he was alive, he was just in a hole [passed out].
