A large percentage of NY smokers are a special breed of douchebags who like to sit right beside u on a bench and light up, or stand next to the children's playground as well as in the dog runs ... not to mention lie on beach and stub out their butts in the sand, or the ones that think it's ok to smoke at a bus stop ... did I mention how they also like to smoke in the middle of outdoor farmers' markets? The list goes on. Well their FU attitude earned them a big FU back.

I do feel bad for the polite smokers who know that others around them may not appreciate the second hand smoke ... pity.

Seriously people get this upset about second hand smoke outside? You're OUTSIDE FFS! You can barely even smell it over all of the other pollutants in the air. Grow a pair and get over it already. I don't smoke and it really doesn't bother me at all sitting outside next to someone who is smoking. In a confined space is a different story.

The NYPD are a bunch of overpaid slobs. We should fire them, take away their pensions, and rehire them for 35k a year. On salary. Without overtime.

Our university campus was made smoke-free this year. The stupid thing is, that the campus for the Medical & Health Sciences faculty is right opposite the hospital and the ban wasn't extended there; so what happens is that everyone here who wants to smoke now just crosses the road and goes and joins the janitors and nurses from the hospital, smoking right outside the hospital, about 10m away from the entrance. And you can definitely smell it when you walk out of the hospital. You can smell it on the people walking in who were just smoking outside, as well.

I'm glad they are concentrating on real crime.

Meanwhile an immigrant saves the day and reports a propane bomb.

It's not just about second hand smoke. I guess you have experience a few NY douchebag smokers first hand. A few days ago, I was in a Greenthumb garden (very small community garden) with a friend and her 3 year old kid. Group of 4 walks into the garden, sit down right next to the table & bench beside us and light up

Just because it's OUTSIDE doesn't mean it's ok. You should not be smoking in crowded NYC areas like public parks, beaches and plazas. Not everyone enjoys inhaling your smoke.

NYC is a confined space, ALL of it. Like I said, unless you're here, u wont get it

I also don't like the smell of your dog when you take it outside. It stinks and can have parasites that could cause me to become sick or die. I would then have to take days off work and incur medical fees. I think that a law should be passed nation wide that says you can't take your animals outside. If you do you will be charged a fine.

This war on smoking has lost focus. If we keep banning smoking everywhere, people might stop smoking. And then who are we going to target with tax increases to pay for giant state budget holes?

i'd rather inhale second hand smoke than inhale the stench a bum creates when he settles down in a confined subway car. we should stick those two groups in a room together. maybe the smells will cancel each other out.

Good. I hate having smoke blow in my face when the wind blows it my way from some smoker walking near me.

That's why they call us the "Home of the Free", because we're perfectly free to do what the most vocal whiners think we should be doing. Don't people realize that others are always going to want to do something that annoys or bothers them in some way?

They started it.

I wouldn't have anything to whine about if more people would live and let live. I'm always on the side of letting people do more stuff they want to do. The other side is about limiting people's actions for what amounts to an inconvenience.

I don't even smoke anymore, but I know that other people will inconvenience me from time to time. I'm fine with that if they'll be fine with the few times I might inadvertently inconvenience them. That's how people have to be in a so-called "free country".

It would be nice to have more dedicated areas for smoking. I don't smoke anywhere with a crowd but in a busy city its hard to find a open spot. I think exhaust fumes from cars and restaurants cooking pungent ethnic food bothers me more than any indirect tobacco smoke.
