O&O Fragged My Harddrive

Last night, I started a defrag of my storage drive in O&O defrag pro. It's an 80GB maxtor, NTFS.

I haven't done one in months - naughty, I know. It was really a mess, something like 70% fragged. I burned/deleted about 25GB of stuff off right before I started the defrag.

When I woke up, I was greeted with a number of windows system error bubbles and a frozen machine. All errors started with "Cannot move file G:\$whatever", where whatever was various names. I assume they were system files of some sort.

When I tried rebooting, windows froze on the loading screen. I tried starting in safe mode, and I saw the driver it froze on but forgot to write it down. I then disconnected the drive internally, and windows started fine.

This has never happened to me before, and I've been using O&O for at least a couple of years. Any thoughts on what went wrong? Any ideas on how to fix it, especially since I can't boot windows with the drive plugged in? There are some pretty important things on that drive.

Did you try running "chkdsk /r" in recovery console on the drive yet? I had a similar thing happen to my main drive and chkdsk /r cleared it up for me. Took several hours for it to finish though.

what is the difference between chkdsk/r and regular chkdsk? and what do you mean by recovery console? now for some help. id try running scandisk and see if there are any bad sectors on the drive. id hate for you to have to partion and reformat and lose all that data.

i always thought that chkdsk /r would repair the boot records whereas normal chkdsk doesn't. Recovery console is the one you access through windows xp setup cd.

I had to try a few things before I remembered my admin password, but chkdsk /r seems to have worked. It boots now and it's been fine so far.
