While we're at it, lets get spammers, advertisers who use pop-ups and -unders (especially ones with fake UIs), and purveyors of spyware...

his ass should get jail time and anyone else doing internet "crimes" should get the same! hopefully this is a start of authorities worldwide starting to make people pay for their actions. the worst part of that whole article is that they are pinning blame on the parents. give me a break. i swear, no one takes responsiblity for anything anymore. he got what he deserved and hopefully he learns from it!

He should be strapped down and bent over so inmates can exploit his open port

Indeed, I saw some statistics not too long ago, that still 25% of the people are surfing the i-net without a virus scanner and over 35% without a firewall. I mean, you can call Micro$oft whatever you want, but the firewall in SP2 was at least a step.

Wasn't that the platform that Al Gore ran on?

While we're bragging, I'm behind a regularly updated Linux server with NAT, and have Bitdefender A/V and application-level firewall on my workstation, and keep up to date on patches (auto update downloads and prompts but does not install them until I say so).

I think he should have gotten the book thrown at him. I spend 3/4 of my time fixing peoples computers that have spyware or viruses. That virus got us at work, and we used Mcaffe and had recent updated virues defs. Took out our network for 3 days, of over 30k computers, just for my company! I don't know where they got the 48k number.

It's terrible.

Look at the Wednesday Jan 19 article here
Virus Writer

This guy is blatantly writing viruses and giving them out to anyone who wants 'em.
This is a worldwide problem and I think the U.N. should get involved in this kind of thing. I don't think it should be left up to the individual governments. It's obvious not all of them want to do anything.:disgust::|

Any reason that link takes me to microsoft.com? Looks like it should take me to f-secure.com instead.

OK, i see it now... Linked fixed

Man, that lack of a colon after the 'http' does some strange things.

Anyway, yes all countries should be way tougher on these spammers & virus writers. Seems like they just get a slap on the wrist compared to the trouble/damage they do.

Wasn't the patch for blaster released WAY before the worm? If I'm right, that makes it the admins' fault for getting it. Not the kid's.

EDIT: Quick research says the patch was out for about a month before blaster was discovered...

Yes! Let's get the UN involved. That always fixes things! If they get really mad, they might say unpleasant things about countries without strong internet security legislation!

surely they could pass several resolutions that could be ignored at a later date!

So you're saying its OK to write viruses if there is a patch out before you release the virus OR SHORTLY AFTER ? Anyway, he should get the max AS ANYONE WHO WRITES VIRUSES OR SPYWARE SHOULD !!!!

I can see the statistics in Georgia now:

Love that link at your site about NETI@Home. Guess they can suddenly afford their "59 cents per second" PCs.

I agree that he should pay for it by going inside ,but you or I don't know what his parents have been like over his lifetime. For all you know the parents might well have a significant part to play in his 'behaviour' ,the parents may well be partially responsible too! ,think about it ,how many times have you seen/heard or read of a minority of parents screwing up a kids head in one way or another?
Without a lot more information on the families history we can't say either way (at least from this limited article).
Of course at 18-19yrs old he should of known better ,hence the deserved jail time.

This makes me laugh
He will still have to pay restitution to Microsoft and to people whose computers were affected in an amount to be determined at a hearing next month.

Like he's gonna have much money to make any difference to those affected:roll:

Btw ,am I the only 1 who thinks its not a good idea to have a politically orientated thread in DC?
Maybe a little too OT?
