O2 sensor replacement from hell...

After living with the dreaded CEL on the maxima for a few years, I've finally decided to replace the B2S1 O2 sensor on the maxima. For those uninformed, this is the post cat sensor, about 1/3 the way down the exhaust pipe, and is not up near the engine. EASY PEASY!!!

I jacked up the car and used stands to get it reasonably tall enough to crawl under. I have both https://www.amazon.com/Powerbuilt-6...d=1488214679&sr=8-3&keywords=o2+sensor+socket

and

https://www.amazon.com/Powerbuilt-6...d=1488214679&sr=8-4&keywords=o2+sensor+socket

sockets to remove o2 sensors. I liberally doused the sensor with pb blaster and waited 20 minutes. I took out the torch, heated up the bung, and doused it again to suck the blaster in. Then I started.

It would not budge.. not an inch. I finally had to get a cheater bar on the end of my 1/2 in flex handle just to get it to turn. I used mapp gas to heat up the bung and area until it glowed red and still, didn't want to budge more than about a 1/4 turn. Finally, after some persuasion, it turned a bit more.. and more, and then got really easy.. uh oh. Turns out I had chewed up the threads in the bung and the sensor was just spinning around, still stuck in, but not coming out. I was loosening it, and still, threads.. gone..

Long story longer, I had to break the exhaust free at the flange, and since it was all super rusty, that involved a grinder and some cobalt bits and lots of drilling, then had to chisel the o2 sensor apart, drill it out, etc.. All the while, its in the mid 40s outside, I'm lying on my back on a cold garage floor, and not enjoying this at all.

Tried to tap the bung with a 3/4x16 pitch tap but the threads were too far gone. Ended up welding a nut on top of the bung, threaded the sensor into it, and put it all back together.

CEL is off, car is back together, and I wasted all Saturday afternoon and most of Sunday futzing around with this.. GRRRR. Now need to tackle a random misfire (p1320) and then the car will be done.

We also replaced the B1S2 sensor on my son's audi a4 and it took all of 20 minutes late Sunday afternoon..

Years ago I broke the bung off the cat. Turns out the bung was just swaged into the cat and I over-torqued it. Luckily I had a friend who was able to TIG weld it back together. Better than from the factory!

Hey at least you didn't have to throw in the proverbial shop towel and have it towed to a mechanic.

Glad I had a nice stick welder and some 6010 rod and tacked it all up nice and fast. It's not perfect, but it's airtight and allowed me to torque the sensor down. I need to get back in there and patch up a few holes in the exhaust I saw when I was under the car but all in all, she's good to go.. Now just need to fix the p1320. It's a random misfire, but not specific to a certain cylinder or it would throw a code to a specific cylinder.

Maxima with P1320? That would be a coil! The tough part would be figuring out which one. if it is intermittent.

yeah, last year i had a p0301 i think which is cylinder 1 coil and after a little troubleshooting to make sure it was the coil and not the plug, i replaced the coil and it went away. If its a random misfire, why doesn't it give a code for the coil that is misfiring? /scratches head...

My 2000 Maxima took at least 6 months of intermittent P1320 with the code reader permanently hooked up until I got the specific cylinder code. And that was also pending code and did not become permanent. Eventually I just replaced them all rather than facing this ritual. I was able to find genuine Nissan coils on ebay for moderate price.

That era ECMs were not as smart as they should have been. My 1999 Odyssey either gave wrong cylinder code or did not give the cylinder code but at least on that van, when a coil goes, it stays dead. Then it is easy to do cylinder drop down test to find the culprit.

LOL. I just changed my 02 sensor off of my RX8 about a week ago. It took no less than 10 minutes for my mechanic to do it. He only charged $15 for it.

The old sensor had a wire broken, I probably could have reused it but whatever. I already got a super good deal on an 02 sensor and it was new. ($70 on Amazon vs $250 at Autozone for the same sensor.)

Too bad I traded the car in last night for somethiing else. I'll post in the garage when I pick it up later tonight.

I'm starting to think more and more that its my upper intake manifold gasket. When cold, the car wants to die sometimes. After warmed up, it runs fine. Misses a bit on the highway, but I'm going to start with the UIM gasket. Ordered a set off Amazon, should be here Thursday, and Friday night I'll swap it out and see if it runs better. There are several threads on maxima.org about this condition and that it can throw a p1320.

You could try spraying starter fluid at the gasket area while running and see if the engine revs up. A crude but simple check.

Sounds like me trying to change my own fucking alternator. Used the biggest breaker bar I could find to no avail. Ended up taking it to the damn shop and handed over $200.

I've met more than a few stuck O2 sensors and have had little luck with the O2 sensor socket. I resorted to buying a 3/4" closed end wrench (I believe that's its size without going out to look) and that, combined with PB Blaster and a rubber hammer, haven't been bested since.

I had one I used, a 12 point that I ground one end off of and tried to use with a breaker bar. It kept slipping because the 02 sensor was so old, the pointy ends of the gripping surface were almost pure rust. I'll post a photo of it later when I'm home. I think mine was 7/8
