These are cool because you can fool people into thinking you have expensive glasses. But the reason Oakley's are expensive are for good reason. I wouldn't want to mess with my eyewear this way. I bought A-Wires like 5 years ago and they still work great. No problems whatsoever.

i saw a news report saying that the fake oakleys are worse off than not wearing sunglasses at all. they like magnify the uv rays and make it worse on your eyes. i don't know i wouldn't try it. just warning you.

A lot of the time, you can tell they're not real. They have a registered trademark symbol on the bridge, and the joints are really cheap looking and bulky. If you're looking for cheap, go to your local drug store and pick up a pair for $7. Decent looking, almost all have UV protection, etc.

$300 for plastic?

Oakley's are nice, but can they really be worth $300 a pair. I suppose they are worth what people are willing to pay. I'm willing to pay $20, hell, I'll buy two pair.

EDIT

ThermalFlux.. i was referring to the previous post which mentions $300 for plastic.. now as we know only those juliets and romeo's and etc are that much from oakley, and like you said, they're not plastic..

what happens with fake oakleys.. and with many pairs of cheap sunglasses w/ UV protection, is that when you get a small hole or scratch in the UV layer of the glasses, the rest of the protective layer will force the UV rays into that scratch or hole, magnifying the damage to that one specific spot. Pretty scary, really. Higher-quality sunglasses have protection against that sort of thing.

I don't know how people could buy things like this online....notice how the website doestn't have very clear images of their products...hmmm....

Also, I have a nice pair of glasses(name just slipped me) for "looking cool"....for Volleyball, skiing, mtb.biking I just grab a pair from the local Circle-K or equiv....they usually get crushed or lost.

My two pesos...

mrCide: Do you really think they are superheated plutonite frames?...

That is just a soft way of screaming out PLASTIC!

Almost all Oakley sunglasses are plastic, except for the wires... xx's,.. juliets... romeo's... etc..

Once you take all the fancy copyrighted words... like Plutonite, and FMJ Full Metal Jacket... etc...

You just have a piece of plastic.

Another misconception is about UV rays... There is no such thing as a UV protection layer... (unless your talking about Polarized lenses) Fake Oakleys even have UV protection... ready the FAQ and you'll see that also. This day in age with mass production I'm sure its more expenseive to hunt out non-UV protective lenses then just go with a already mass produced UV protected lens.

If a pair of shades are not UV protected, then your pupils are dialted (becuase of lack of light), and the UV rays have more of an area to absorb into. That is why it would be dangerous to wear non UV protected lenses. You would usually start getting unexplainted headaches, or you'll noticed a problem with everything being really bright, and painful to look at when you take non-UV protected lenses off.

A lot of times these over seas shops making knockoffs use the same molds as the manufactuer becuase they probaby sold out to a knockoff operation. That happens all the time. I've noticed the only poor replica is the Juliets,... both in plastic and metal. Those are the only ones I've seen that suck.

the replica outlet place has EWires that look incredibly real. the quality is also very good, surprisingly. who would've known? i've also seen that places juliets. those are crappy ass plastic. but again, their e wires look and feel the same as the originals. the a and e wires are metal. the juliets are plastic (and suck). so, who knows? i don't know about the other models.

yipperzz...

First of all, plastics absorb UV quite effectively. This is why you see very inexpensive sunglasses offering UV protection. But, even if the UV light did pass through the plastic it would not be focused by the lenses. If that was the case, everything would be out of focus.

WhiteStuph...

I'm sorry, but that's just ridiculous. While scratches can diffract light, you will not suffer severe eye damage due to a lens scratch. As above, plastics are inefficient UV transmitters.

But, why believe me. I'm just a Ph.D. laser spectroscopist.

I bought some of these back in the summer... I got them right after I bought some sunglasses at the "sunglasses hut" And I was more than disappointed in the quality of the Foakleys....they just aren't the same as good quality sunglasses... They eyejackets I got are HUGE. They look nothing like the ones in the pictures because they are mimics of the ORIGINAL ones that didn't sell too well... The A-Wires I got were better, but the rubber was cheap and they didn't fit my head very well.... I would definitely have to say "you get what you pay for" and you don't really know what you're paying for since you can't see em before you get em. Just remember that and...uhh...have a nice day!

High quality products are always worth the money, IMHO. I would not risk your eyes, just to save about $100.

Okay I have had my E-Wires for 4 years and they are still going strong.

I've heard the reason Oakley's are protective is because the lens is made out of a material that naturally reflects UV light. This means the whole LENS is made out of it. Now if you get a scratch in your Oakley's the lens will STILL reflect the UV light. Now if you get a cheap pair of glasses with a protective "film" on it, once that film gets scratched it can cause damage to your eyes. Let me explain. Your eyes get dilated when you wear glasses because less light is going into your eye. Now if you get a scratch on the protective film, your eyes will remain dilated because it is just a scratch. Now not only will UV rays be able to get into your eye, but since your pupils are dilated it is like the flood gates are wide open.

Feel free to correct me if I have stated facts incorrectly or... wrong

people who make fakes are getting really good. the foakleys from the garment district are practically identical looking. i noticed two very minute differences (not counting the lens). 1) the insides of the legs of the foakleys lack the part number that the real ones have (foakleys do have the "jacket" written like the real ones now). 2) the finish is not as smooth as the real stuff. now, the biggest difference are the lenses. the real stuff is so much more clear. the foakleys give a sureal or blurry kind of vision compared to the real ones. the UV protection isn't such a big deal to me cuz i wear contacts that are UV protected. so that's my opinion on foakleys. i say get the real stuff.

I dont remember when it was necessary to spend $250 for sunglasses to benefit "your health." There is one reason why Oakleys are so expensive: brand name fashion. My friend used to work with women's volleyball tournaments. The workers would get Oakleys, direct from a catalog, for $25. They would even get free old or 'experimental' (goofy-looking) Oakleys at times. Why? Because they cost about $8 to make.

So, if I get a scratch on the mere "protective film" on my $5 Wal Mart special discount glasses, I go get another pair. If I leave them on a table somewhere at a restaurant, I shrug, and go get another pair.

Oakleys are definitely not worth the ludicrous price charged for them. Then again, you could say that for 99% of the fashion market in general. I guess it all depends on what you feel like wasting your money on to make yourself feel better.

i'm getting 3 of my friends some new oakleys, and myself a new pair for quite a discount. this is my third pair i'm buying for myself (i originally had e-wires, which got pretty messed up when i went mountain climbing =/ , my second pair were polarized a-wires for casual, and i'm getting new eye jackets for sports), and say it's definitely worth it for the original. when you get foakleys then you know they're fake and you feel pretty stupid wearing them in the first place IMHO . i've known friends who bought some fake ones that looked quite legit, but we all knew they were fake because whenever anyone asked he couldn't lie and just "umm yea, they're real !" . he ended up buying a real pair, and said there was noticable improvement (which i couldn't vouch for, never owned a pair of fakes).

i couldn't afford full price for all these oakleys i'm buying, so i usually pay less then retail through deals . if anyone's interested in a pair of real ones i'm about to place an order for some of my friends, just PM or email me and i'll see what i can do
