The deadline for nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize was Feb. 1st.

He became President on Jan 20th.

He was President for 10 days before his nomination. He accomplished nothing then. And he has barely accomplished anything since then.

I'm sorry, but he did not deserve it. Zimbabwean Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai should have received the prize.

I would have guessed Sima Samar actually...

I would have guessed the Pillsbury Dough Boy before Obama.

Here's the full citation:

"The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 is to be awarded to President Barack Obama for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. The Committee has attached special importance to Obama's vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons.

"Obama has as president created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play. Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult international conflicts. The vision of a world free from nuclear arms has powerfully stimulated disarmament and arms control negotiations. Thanks to Obama's initiative, the USA is now playing a more constructive role in meeting the great climatic challenges the world is confronting. Democracy and human rights are to be strengthened.

"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future. His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population.

"For 108 years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has sought to stimulate precisely that international policy and those attitudes for which Obama is now the world's leading spokesman. The Committee endorses Obama's appeal that "Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges."

Unbelievable ........ just unbelievable. And I thought last years winners were a joke/fluke.
I have nothing against Obama but this is sheer stupidity when there are so many more deserving individuals!

Nobel Peace prize has jumped the shark, they never gave it to Gandhi and then with ALGORE and now this, definitely has become a political prize, not a peace prize

Who would have nominated him say, 6 months ago and why?

he was nominated 11 days after being sworn into office, so he was obviously nominated for his work during his presidential campaign

most peaceful presidential campaign, i guess

So basically, the award now goes for words not actions.

True, what a joke. Obama has quite literally done nothing of merit besides being black and getting elected; so far clinton did far more to earn this than he.

I think the award was for Cash for Clunkers.

Some people may think there is no work and effort behind this, but a real pro makes it look effortless. The real work got done behind the scenes, did not make headlines, and that is part of the reasons it succeeds, simply because it did not make headlines with everyone and their brother and law putting their emotional 2 cents in.

And maybe even more galling for some, the quiet diplomacy of Hillary should get some credit also.

I guess the Nobel committee has been infiltrated by soccer moms, who think that everyone should get a trophy after a game, even the losers, because they worked hard and played fair. Doesn't matter if you actually accomplish something. And seriously folks, the bar was set pretty low to improve our standing on the international stage. Just get ANYONE besides Bush in there, and actually talk to a few countries (doesn't even matter what you say to them, just TALK to them), and the international community would have liked us better.

This is hilarious, not the NPP and Obama, but how the right-ies will immediately begin down playing its importance. Immediately begin calling it a sham and worthless award, yada yada yada. The positive side?.. Watching the right-ies down play. Im sure Rush will call the NPP a commie plot...
Maybe I shouldn?t say ?right-ies?, more so Obama hater?s.

OMG... A black man sits in the Whitehouse AND holds the NPP... OH THE HUMANITY

This statement needs to be repeated in this thread.

I like Obama and all, but this premature at best. He hasn't even decided how much we want to escalate the Afghan war, nor is Isreal/Pal close to being solved.
This won't help him any...

I guess the award is for not being a giant douche like GWB.

I second the motion. I like what he's done thus far, but to me it looks like he's being awarded just for not being Bush.

OMFG. There's that word again!! Does nobody realize 'hope' was just a stupid catch phrase Obama has been throwing around for the last year? Look, if he had done something to merit this, awesome. But as of 6 months again, when he would have to been nominated (or even now) Obama has done pretty much nothing aside from being black, having good speech hype and getting elected. How this mertis a Nobel has me utterly confused.

Your comments are even more hilarious! You can't even look past the politics of it, which is what I am trying to do, and look at the award based on some qualitative metric. Explain why he got this award, besides being NOT bush?

Well, they basically proved the NPP is a joke back when they awarded it to the terrorist Arafat, so this is just the latest punch line in the continuing joke. I wonder if a single honest liberal will actually say "eh, yah I can see how the righties might see this as a little silly - you know the whole 10 days in office thing". I won't hold my breath

The American Right, I am beginning to see, are like Truthers, idiots who think think they see a reality that isn't there and whose delusions demand a lunatic fidelity, a tiny minority of crack pots in an otherwise sea of normality.

He's not George Bush and his VP isn't Darth Cheney. Sure, the bar is low, but this is a titanic achievement in and of itself and such a HUGE improvement for the rest of the world.

Of course, all of you bouncing around in your parochial right-wing echo chamber would have zero idea how relieved the rest of the entire world is.

Obama deserves this award. Even before Al Gore won it for his fraudulent global warming shtick it was clear the Nobel Peace prize could easily be called the Nobel Ant-American Prize. With that reality in mind its clear Obama is top candidate for prize.

Surely that isn't your argument. Did you know that I am personally responsible for avoiding full scale nuclear war between China and Russia back in June? Yeah it didn't make the headlines because that's just how damn effective and subtle I am.

It's not the stuff you can see about me, it's the stuff that you can't.

Ok so you admit that the bar was low, but claim this to be a huge achievement? Those two statements are contradictory. A titanic achievement is landing on the moon. "Not being GWB" is not exactly in the same class.
