True, what a joke. Obama has quite literally done nothing of merit besides being black and getting elected; so far clinton did far more to earn this than he.

Yep

Seriously? The Nobel Peace Prize? I'm by no means an Obama hater, but WTF? Don't you have to actually DO something to get this?

He's not George Bush and his VP isn't Darth Cheney. Sure, the bar is low, but this is a titanic achievement in and of itself and such a HUGE improvement for the rest of the world.

Of course, all of you bouncing around in your parochial right-wing echo chamber would have zero idea how relieved the rest of the entire world is.

Ok so you admit that the bar was low, but claim this to be a huge achievement? Those two statements are contradictory. A titanic achievement is landing on the moon. "Not being GWB" is not exactly in the same class.

I'm not Bush either...someone give me a prize dammit!

Reading some of the replies so far... yep hit it right on the head.

Except, of course, for the fact the he did nothing to warrant it.

I think what Perky is saying is, we all deserve this award - there are literally billions of us who are not GWB, and have never shared a presidential ticket with Dick Cheney. I hear there's a substantial cash award with this prize - when can we pick up our checks?

Irony and humor challenged right wingers, totally out of touch with the rest of the world outside of the US, huh. Who'd a thunk it?

Suck on it, losers!

wow, this award was a shock to liberals as well. I mean, i like the guy, he's very inspirational, but 9 months into his term he got this?? deeds speak louder than words, and the guy has been talking alot but he really has'nt done anything significant yet. Its way to premature to give him a peace prize. Kinda makes a joke of the nobel peace prize. if i talk alot about what i WANT to do it doesnt merit a prize until i've done it.

Yeah, they seem to have lost awareness of the old saying "Actions speak louder than words."

Well, it seems as though even people on the left are perplexed by this and don't think he should have gotten it. And I agree. Couldn't they have waited a year and awarded it to Morgan Tsvangirai this year? Or were they afraid Obama's efforts would fizzle out in the next and wanted to make sure they got him one before that?

This is pretty silly. So many people are more deserving of this than Obama, and I like him. Give him a couple years to actually do something.

As did Peanut boy...
All Carter did was to engineer the first treaty wherein an Arab nation recognized Israel's right to exist, and establish a peace between Israel and Egypt that has lasted for more than a generation. Clearly a sham.

Refresh my memory. How long between that work and the award?

Guys...

The deadline for nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize was Feb. 1st.

He became President on Jan 20th.

He was President for 10 days before his nomination. He accomplished nothing then. And he has barely accomplished anything since then.

I'm sorry, but he did not deserve it. Zimbabwean Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai should have received the prize.

He did more in 10 days to deserve the Peace prize than your hero in 8 years

Uh, where did he say the Bush was his hero? What's confusing people here, even the ones that actually LIKE Obama, is that, other thatn words, Obama has done nothing to even get nominated for, let alone deserve, the award. The other nominees, to the best of my knowledge, have actually done something worthy of recognition. I know that a good many people these days believe that merely saying something == actually achieving something, but there are still a good many of us that still believe that actions/results are what matter. Just saying something shouldn't be reason enough to winn an award, unless it's a Toastmasters competition.

When all sides agree, other than the ultimate suck-ups, on the questionability of this award and what it means to the values of the award, it's pretty obvious what a bad choice this was.

As for americans, I'd have rather seen it go to rick riley for organizing the mosquito nets for africa or the college basketball coach that gathered and delievered thousands of shoes to south america and africa.

More often, the prize is awarded to encourage those who receive it to see the effort through, sometimes at critical moments.

For the first time a sitting American President, elected by a majority of the people, received a great international honor. You would think most Americans would be happy. The world certainly seems to be. It's just a few losers and sour puses who seem to be whining. Seems like there is no pleasing them.

Yeah, except for the entire the majority of americans didn't vote for him thing.

It's pretty clear the international community is grateful we didn't inflict another 4 years of GWB on them by electing McCain and that hick from Alaska.

Mr. Obama.. can you do something about the free falling $, the 10% unemployment rate, and the general SHIT the economy is taking? Thanks!

And I would have guessed Sen. Cordoba of Colombia before Morgan Tsvangirai...

Tsvangirai was the clear favorite.

There was no clear favorite. Rather, the cloud of Sen. Cordoba, Sameer, and the two Chinese dissidents seemed to be pulling the most attention toward the end.
