seems kinda bullshit-y, tbh.

CNN: What has President Obama done specifically to deserve the award?

Zakaria: Quite a bit, in fact. He ended many "war on terror" practices that made people (both inside and outside the country) see America as betraying its ideals; he reached out to the Muslim world in a way that hasn't been done before; he made proposals to reduce the world's nuclear arsenals; he re-engaged on the Israeli-Palestinian issue; he started winding down the Iraq war.

shouldn't we wait to see the results of Obama's diplomatic stances before we anoint him?

This just once again proves what a farce the nobel prize has become. I'm sure Alfred would be rolling in his grave. Let Obama earn the damn thing.

Also this proves the infatuation everyone has for this guy. I mean he hasn't done anything but people are willing to suck him off.

I mean, i like the guy, he's very inspirational, but 9 months into his term he got this?? deeds speak louder than words, and the guy has been talking alot but he really has'nt done anything significant yet. Its way to premature to give him a peace prize. Kinda makes a joke of the nobel peace prize. if i talk alot about what i WANT to do it doesnt merit a prize until i've done it.

Here's the kicker...he didn't win it for the 9 months in office. Nominations had to be in TWO FUCKING WEEKS into his term. He won it for his first two weeks in office.

Doesn't deserve it, but I don't see how this is a bad thing in any way.

The Euro's are just saying, hey we're glad the US isn't conducting foreign policy like the neighborhood bully, thanks for not being Bush.

Edit - Though I do enjoy the vapid, frothy lamentations from you nutters, keep it comin'!

U.S. President Barack Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for giving the world "hope for a better future" with his work for peace and calls to reduce the global stockpile of nuclear weapons.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised Obama for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples".

"Very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," the committee said in a citation.

it's all about hope... change is for another day...

damn Reagan and Gorbachev ACTUALLY DID more for reducing the stockpile of nuclear weapons than anybody. ever hear of STARTI?? I was in North Dakota when we blew up our ICBM silos. Also the INF treaty by Regan totally banned whole categories of intermediate-range tac nukes. Those were real treaties that actually reduced the worlds stockpile of nukes.

all Obama has done is give a speech..

Europe might be happy for it, but it hasn't been long enough to see what the true results of Obama's approach to foreign policy will be.

He became President on Jan 20th.

He was President for 10 days before his nomination. He accomplished nothing then. And he has barely accomplished anything since then.

I'm sorry, but he did not deserve it. Zimbabwean Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai should have received the prize.

What precisely did Obama do 11 days into his Presidency which warranted his nomination?

Facts please.

If you don't understand or can't quite grasp the actual rationale for his getting the award, it can only be because you don't WANT to or are too small minded to.

His very election brought a measure of reasonableness and sanity back to the Presidency of the most powerful nation on earth after eight long years of lies, duplicity and abysmally lethal ignorance.

Perknose, everything you say is true, but I still believe that Obama has done little to deserve the prize.

Some of us like to see results rather than simply experience warm fuzzies. It has nothing to do with small-mindedness, an deverything to do with knowing how the world works - nothing is done until its done.

the threshold for the Nobel Peace Prize should be a little higher than "not Bush" imo

I think Obama's popularity on the world stage dwarfs his popularity in the states.I think being mired in the worst recession people are losing patience especially people who cannot find work.

funny how not one Obama lover in here has posted one thing he has done to deserve the reward. all they do is attack people who disagree with them, or Obama and even the NPP committee for giving what used to be the highest of highest award to Obama. god you guys are sad.

Seems to be what he's saying.

Frankly, I'd like to amend Perknose's message a bit to reflect on the truth of the matter. Obama won it for being a Democrat.

the most compelling argument is that he's not Bush.

and that's a great thing, but I think the threshold should be set a little higher and I'd like to see the actual impact of his foreign policy before rewarding it.

the Iraq war compelled whatshisface to disarm, but I wouldn't argue that Bush deserved the peace price because of it and ignoring all the other long-term implication of the war.

Yep - due to his election I and many other Europeans no longer consider America to be a threat, or at least the feeling is greatly reduced. That has to be a good thing for world peace.

Was Bush planning an invasion of France or Britain that I missed?
