Relations with Russia would probably have hit an impasse in any case. Apparently there was talk about Ukraine (a border country to Russia) joining NATO... hm NATO right up against Russia.

Imagine a hypothetical where the Warsaw Pact still existed and a country on Germany's east border wanted to join the Warsaw Pact. I think some political minded wonks and politicians would be losing their minds.

Perhaps if NATO told Ukraine there is no way that Ukraine is joining NATO, Russia wouldn't have been such dicks to Ukraine lately.
