In a little under a year Ebola has killed just over 3000 people in western africa, mainly in 3 countries, Liberia and Sierra Leone and Guinea.

In 2012 there were 207 million cases of malaria in the world with deaths of between 470,000 to 800,000. 90 % of those deaths are in Africa, btw.

We should send all Ebola patients to DC.

That way DC and President O-Bomb-A would have to deal with their own real life stupid decisions. There is nothing to worry about our medical community can handle it.

Yes, place restrictions on direct flights here, so they're forced to fly through Europe, South America, etc, on their way here (thereby infecting MORE people).

Because, you know, our present government has done such a great job stopping people from other countries from getting in here already, right? :hmm:

Mass shootings - government better not do anything about gun control!!

1 person enters the US, with ebola from Africa (not South America) - close dur borders Obama!! Why isn't Obama doing anything bout thu borders!!!!!

Yes, lets use comparisons. Your comparison of malaria has a death rate of as high as 1 in 255 or as low as 1 in 440. That's less than 1%. Ebola is right around 50%

It's really interesting to see people who pride themselves in their rationality working themselves up into a hysterical frenzy over one case.

True, a few will slip through the cracks. Nothing is foolproof, but if the numbers do start climbing then we need to change tactics as our safeguards would be proven ineffective.

I agree! If things get worse we should absolutely change our approach. It's hard to say that's warranted from current circumstances though.

At the very least they should be Quarantined/Tested before leaving the Airport.

Its got up to a 3 week incubation period, you might as well just shut down air travel from those countries if you are going to quarantine them for 3 weeks.

Is there a reliable test for Ebola before you are symptomatic?

And so far one infected person has made it to the US...

I don't think there's an easy test for it. Would involve finding the virus under a microscope, possibly.

I know what the death rate difference is. I also understand the odds of getting Ebola versus Malaria.

When looking at the numbers which of the 2 seems to be the larger problem, a disease that's killed less than 4000 people in roughly a year or one that kills 100s of thousands per year? And that's year after year after year.

The movie Outbreak was not a documentary. The world is not ending.
