Shouldn't Obama be worried about more important things like fixing the economy? We're at 10% unemployment. His opinion on the mosque is irrelevant. A whole press conference wasted on a minor issue. Total fail. Get back to work Obama.
Hey Erkel, it wasn't a Press Conference. Read the article.

This is more about sensitivity to the victims families rather than religious freedom. The people of New York are offended that a group wants to build a mosque where a friend, family member, or coworker was killed by muslim extremists. They would prefer it be further awy from ground zero.

Woah. Please do not group all the "People of New York" together in one lump like that. SOME people are offended, but some are not. Some of the offended were direct witnesses or lost loved ones on 9/11, some of the non-offended were in the same position as the offended.

So he gathered a crowd and there were reporters and he probably had his trusty teleprompter next to him but it isn't a press conference? Playing with semantics huh?

I have no problem with the Mosque being built. If you do have a problem, please turn in your "I'm an American" card.

You know, if it has nothing to do with the Federal Government and its just local issue, then most people should STFU (Fox News, Newt Gingrich, Republicans in CONGRESS...). It's private property - it might be in bad taste to some people to build a mosque and community center there, but too f*cking bad.

And it's not the "WTC Mosque". It's 2 blocks away. This whole topic makes me sick to see all the people who seem to hate the idea of religious freedom (Why do you hate the Constitution?) - because this isn't the only potential mosque that's being protested in the US.

"Why don't they build it somewhere else?"

JUST NOT IN MY BACK YARD!!!!!

LOL

Would three blocks instead of two be far enough away or should they build it in Mecca?

I believe that a lot of us who came out against it were under the impression that it was being built right next door to the WTC not blocks away.

I generally don't care for Obama, but don't think he's doing anything wrong in this case. If anything, even if unpopular, he's probably saying and doing the 'correct' thing. I think it could be considered bad taste that they chose this location to build a mosque right now, but they certainly have the right to do so.

It's BLOCKS away from ground zero.
What exactly would be an distance that is NOT in "bad taste"?

Exactly. But honestly, even if it was built AT ground zero, what does it matter? This being an issue just goes to show how close minded and ignorant people in this world are. They don't even know who their "enemies" are.

You'll love this. It was a gathering at the White House to observe Ramadan

If a dirty cop shoot someone unjustly it doesn't make all cops murders. If a priest molests a kid it doesn't make all priests pedos. The list goes on and on.

I'm assuming the people involved in the building of this mosque had nothing to do with 9/11 or other terrorist activities. If they did/do, I'm thinking they picked the worst possible place for the next sleeper cell (and I'm not saying that in jest).

Do you think the city would grant me a permit to open a bacon and pulled pork stand outside the mosque? Would the smell of pork seeping into the mosque be deemed objectionable to the Muslims?

I knew Hussein Barack Hussein Obama was a Muslim!

I wasn't aware that defending freedom of religion was unpopular, but I don't live in the US so I don't really know the situation down there. It's possible freedom of religion only applies if you're a hardcore creationist christian. Everyone else can fuck right off with their other religions.

I'd say in the wake of 9-11 that Islam alone is singled out.

Excellent Idea!

I thought he wouldn't take any stance on it, as its a local issue. Why take a stance on this issue if he didn't have to? Lose/Lose situation.

He needs to hire better advisers.

Probably because he is doing the right thing, which is what everyone is supposed to do, especially the President.

It takes guts to stand up and support this, which is the right thing (and 100% legal BTW) when a lot of bigots and idiots are against it, which is why I guess you just quietly carry on with your bigotry.

There's apparently already plans for a gay bar called Outfidels.

The only fools who are offended by the mosque are those that equate all of Islam with the attack on the WTC. That somehow, even American citizens who happen to be Muslim share some responsibility for the attacks. You also have the right to be stupid in this country. Exercise it proudly.

MOST new yorkers oppose it and are highly offended.
count me as one of them.

Oh, and don't forget the "Obama is a Muslim" attack. This is more fuel to the fire.
