This thread is a gem. You can't criticize his position, so you either call him stupid or assume he's a hypocrite.

Reading some of the responses here, it's clear that the GOP is going to go kicking and screaming into the losing column, just like in 2006. Except the defeats will be a little more resounding, with the millions of new voters who registered during this extended primary season.

It sounds like some of you guys will be picking Obama apart until 2012 when he's up for re-election.

There's so much in what he said that is just plain dumb.

1) Wow luxuries... what does he want, us to go back to living in mud huts?
2) Why do douche liberals care so much why the things we get with our HARD WORK ETHIC might make other nations jealous? If there's one thing htat bothers me about what he said it's this. This douchebag and every other douchebag liberal like him would no doubt give our sovernty away to anyone abroad who pretends to be our allies.

THis guy needs to be shown a landslide defeat because he will change our country all right, by making null and void the hard work we put into getting where we are.

Bush sounds like an idiot from his mannerisms but this guy is an idiot for his actual words.

Thank you. Seriously. Every now and then my democratic party enthusiasm flags a bit. Stuff like this reminds me why it's absofuckinglutely necessary that someone, anyone, other than republicans get into power in this country.

Hmm, so cutting back on consumption would put us back into mud huts? Who is the idiot here, the one who says we consume too much, or the one who pulls statements out of his ass when being so ignorant on the subject his reply looks more like an angry teenagers reply to being told he can't stay out past midnight?

More than half the US is overweight/obese. The cost of which is enormous and is destroying the health care system, as well as shifting manufacturing jobs out of the US with the insane health care costs to pay there overweight workers. Can you really argue that we should cut down on our food consumption and make better food choices? Only in the last 40 years has it been cool to be fat.

Our SUV love affair is already dying, Obama is more or less saying this is good. A good chunk of the foreign policy issues facing America today is a result of natural resource disputes. Ideologies are just a excuse to act upon it. Even McCain has admitted as much.

Electrical consumption again goes back to dependence on other countries as well as cost to business. Energy prices are just going to keep going up, which will eventually (for the business it hasn't already driven out) be a factor in more business than just manufacturing.

You can sit there and bitch saying "I deserve to eat my big mac, drive my 7mpg SUV all the while having every light/air conditioner on in my house if I can afford it!". Yes, you can, the entire American Class system is based on the amount of money you have, so this mentality works. When you start having to pay out of your ass for health care, higher gas prices and higher energy prices because everyone has that mentality you should be the last on in line to complain. Why? The Arabs with the energy and the India/China/Mexico slave labour are doing the same thing you were, doing what they want no matter the consequences to anyone.

Great strategy - tell voters how wrong they are for running the air conditioning and not going hungry. That will work wonders for winning over the middle class.

Obama's point was that the U.S. should lead by example - not that you're "wrong" for doing those things. Driving gas-guzzling vehicles, stuffing our faces until we're obese and burning energy needlessly aren't exactly leading by example, but then you knew that.

I think the Republicans and Hillary will let this talking point just fade away once the predictable rabid Pavlovian anger response | ) has died away.

If they actually try and flesh the issue out, it will just end up being another gas tax holiday gift to Obama.

I don't actually see a position, which is partly why we're talking about it. If Barack is pointing out SUVs, air conditioning, and eating as problems; it's reasonable to presume that he is considering a solution to 'fix' these problems by taking them away. The other interpretation is that he dislikes those activities and the people who engage in them, thus not exactly making him a vote magnet for those people.

Actually he has already stated solutions to all three issues. If you cared about the facts of this you would know that though. It is obvious you are nothing more than a political hack who reads 2 sentences he doesn't agree with and goes screaming through the street yelling "look, look at this!!! omg!! its the end of america, mud huts here we come!!"

Increased mandatory minimal fuel efficiency programs, and a voluntary campaign for Patriots to cut back on their own energy consumption in individually small, but collectively significant manners?

Pursuing this talking point in depth would be nothing more than Gas Tax Holiday gift #2 from McCain 08 / Clinton 12 ticket

That's a completely reasonable assumption if you have the reasoning skills of a koala. You assume that because he [correctly] suggest that Americans are over-consuming (there are decades worth of scientific studies that prove this beyond a doubt, even compared to other 'western' industrialized nations), that he wants to strip us of SUVs, AC and food.

Maybe he wants to raise awareness about energy consumption, push cleaner alternative fuels, create greener 'smart' national power grids, and encourage better eating habits. That sounds a little more 'reasonable' to presume.

Apparently, you're conveniently glossing over the false outrage by those who would never vote for Obama anyway, but are content to dissemble every word into a presumed attack on their lifestyle. Or whatever passes for a reason behind their retarded feigned moral indignation.

It's comedy to watch though, I think you're missing out on at least half the fun.

No it won't. He already brought this subject up during his senate run when he was attacked on the exact same comments and he explained it than and will explain it again. Unlike the majority of posters on this board most of our elected officials can explain there positions.

I would think this (my support for a candidate that in other times I might be reluctant to support) would be a wake-up call to you as to how poorly Republican policies have fared in the past 8 years, and how delusional, hypocritical, and disconnected the Republicans have become to their policies (as evidenced in part by your continued support of them on the basis of policies that Bush and the GOP leadership do not actually uphold in practice).

I didn't make this decision to support Obama out of choice, but out of pragmatic necessity, and civil responsibility.
Next step, in the unfortunate and unlikely event that the Republicans win in November and continue their agenda, will be to take up arms and stage the revolution. It really is that bad.

CAD has simply fallen to pieces of late. It's sad, because I used to respect him in the past. Unfortunately, he apparently finds this internet fantasy world more important than real life, and is unable/unwilling to accept/admit the fact that his party betrayed him. All that's left is a snarling dog who has been kicked too often by his master.
