This is along the same lines as the free Autozone engine code reading thread. I found it a while back and didn't think to post it even though it's a smoking deal IMO. You get the hardware for ~$85 and free software. It works, I've tried it.

This is a slightly better deal, since the software is free, and you can build it yourself for as little as $21 (shipping included), if you have a decent junk bin of spare electronic parts (as I do). You have to get the chip from the company, since the firmware is contained in it.

If you don't have a junk bin, you can get it for $76 assembled. Still a better deal. Check it out:

If you simply need to read codes and not much else, here's a Code Reader for $50.

Here is another PC based OBD2 scanner. A little more expensive, but I think it has more functionality. The software itself is also free, and it looks like at least for Asian cars it is a straight connector, no chips needed. I might be wrong on that point though. I have a handheld Actron Scanner with OBD2 support and OBD for Chrysler to cover my vehicles. I have never gotten around to messing with a PC based one, but my scanner uses a standard serial port connection to the tool, and the OBD2 connector on the other end, so it might work. Of course, it might also blow out a COM port when I try it as well. Time to pull out the old 486/120 for some experiments

This is a very good deal, in fact what i want to see is if other people's software works on this. I have a OBDII interface i got for 82$ and i like this interface better. Does this one log data if you want it to? I love how cheap OBDII scanners are now, we can finally find out what is busted on our cars
