Slightly off-topic (but still related because I believe it's one of the reasons why some people choose GTX over XTX): Why didn't ATI come up with an HSF like NV's? (GTX's HSF, not the GT's) At this point the only reservations that I have on ATI is the power/heat issue, and the still-not-so-perfect drivers/compatibility issue. I was sooooooooo tempted when I saw XTX for $499 @CompUSA, (and I have like $400 worth of CompUSA gift cards) but couldn't pull the trigger because of the aforementioned issues. It's a shame because I think they make such fine GPUs. I mean, software issue is dependent on, well, software but they could have copy-cat'ed the GTX's HSF....

Why would you want to find higher prices? Im going by newegg, which is probably the biggest e-store. The XTX is cheaper, and actually available. They have 14 XTX's, all in stock. And just 10 7900GTX, with just one in stock.

i said there are higher prices ones as well, not that i wanted one. and again, with prices coming down, the XTX is not more expensive. nothing for you to argue with me there.

your reply does bring up a question tho.. how come everyone is buying the GTX's (no one can seem to keep them in stock), and they just can't seem to give the XTX's away (everyone seems to be overstocked and running firesale prices)?

pfft... thats a crock and you know it. If there were so many GTXs to go around, why is it that I amd still waiting in the step-up queue at evga to swap out this spare 7800gt i have sitting on my desk. Hell even guy i talked to at evga told me that nvidia hasnt allocated them enough chips because they don't have them to allocate

heh.. well, what i started as just a comment to get some fanboys stirred up (hence the "wink", and a followup post stating as such) turned into a 6 page thread (so far) over at hocp forums. doesn't take much to stir 'em up i guess, lol...

He actually gave plenty of hints that he was just playing around but no one picked up on it That's the entertainment part!

hmm... sounds like a personal attack to me.. think those are against the rules ya know...

what's really funny tho is that i make a remark for which you call me a "troll", then you plagerize my statement by running off to hardforum to create a new thread - with the very thing you accuse me of being a "troll" for!

the sad part is i didn't take it seriously. you obviously did (certainly stirred you up enought to go post a thread about it).

IIRC, PS2a is actually more capable in some ways than PS2b. "b" was just named as such b/c it arrived with the X800, after "a" with the FX5800.

Not sure if it's anything more than a technicality with Oblivion, though. It may allow for small speedups thanks to fewer passes, similar to PS3 and PS2b in Far Cry. OTOH, maybe PS2b's extra temp registers are significant with Oblivion's shaders.

B3D forgot to post something, PS2.a can only runs a maximum instruction count of 1024, while the PS2.b can run up to 1,536. Anyway any card running more than 512 may struggle, now you can imagine how bad a videocard will struggle using loops, subroutines and branching to get up to 65,536 or more. After all there's only 512 instructions slots for PS2.x and 3.0. After all, shorter shaders will run faster than longer ones in any hardware.

i am totally satisfied with my midrange setup in playing this beautiful game and just don't have time for Video like before.

60-160fps in dungeons, 40-100fps in cities, and 40-60fps outdoors.

SLI FTW!

and exactly how many ppl can afford 600 dollars? and the extra money on SLI mobo and sli psu? and we all know how SLi setups does badly in mininum framerate department. Just buy a x1900xt for around 400 dollars now and oc it to the max FTW

Millions of people bought SLI motherboards when they upgraded to PCIE, because it just made sense to do so if you are an enthusiast. I seriously doubt most people with $400-$600 video cards bought single slot motherboards.

As far as a PSU goes, with the X1900 XTX requiring a whopping 120Watts at full load, and the 7800GTXat 80 watts, I don't think anyone is saying "Yay! I get to keep my 350W PSU from 1998 to run my X1900XT!".

Not everyone wants to "OC cards to the max" . The cheapest X1900XT on newegg is $434., which to me, is a fair amount of money to risk "OCing to the max".

As reported at DailyTech:
ATI claims thermal damage is strictly not covered by RMA and that blown internal fuses in the GPU will notify RMA teams if the GPU has been stressed too hard.

If other brands can do the same (check the blown internal fuses) I personally don't want to be the guy they're telling,"Too bad, so sad. The blown internal fuses indicate you've "OCd your card to the max" and this is now considered a fraudulent RMA."

Rollo, you still trying to sell SLI? Man, you need to give it up. Everyone knows that is you.

The X1900 XTX had grass shadows enabled in addition to HQ AF (something nVidia can't even reproduce) and it STILL beat out the 7900 GTX in Oblivion, that's pretty significant. If they did an apples to apples comparison and turned off grass shadows for the XTX and used standard AF it would've stomped the 7900 GTX; the GTX went from a minimum of 12 fps to 17 fps by shutting off grass shadows.

a feature with no benefit is hardly a feature:

The difference between the image quality on the Radeon X1900XTX and GeForce 7900 GTX wasn't noticeable, even with Grass Shadows turned off - all that seemed to do was darken the grass texture a little.

it's pretty pathetic when ppl have to grasp at every little straw to try and claim an advantage. while i'd have to agree the xtx has an edge (also cost more, btw), the reality is they offer the same gameplay and same iq (tho you have to "suffer" with a little lighter grass texture if you have a GTX).

And given the fact that the X1900XTX runs at a higher resolution makes You´r statement(s) seem like bable to me

huh? the article they are running same resolution.

Looks like the 1900xtx is the card to have for Oblivion - too bad they took so long to bring it out, I probably would have got it if the price was right.

Oh well, I'm doing fine with System anyway. Can't complain about 60-70 FPS Outdoors with their 'Ultra High' settings - looks good too
