Wow, low detail settings in oblivion look horrible. Basically everything in the world just disappears.

Well, I'm running mine at nearly everything maxed 1920 x 1200 and my average frame rate is 60fps.
60-160fps in dungeons, 40-100fps in cities, and 40-60fps outdoors.

SLI FTW!

The X1900XTX is arguably superior than a 7900GTX in a single card config, but I want to see benches for dual graphics cards. Maybe SLi will be able to edge out Crossfire with its greater efficiency.

Crossfire support (AFR) for Oblivion will be added with the 6.4s next month.

I would also note the drivers used in the testing for the article.

They were testing the stock X1900XTX vs an OCed 7900GTX 512MB running at 670/1640

They tested the cards for MAX PLAYABLE SETTINGS. The X1900XTX could play at maximum settings with HQ 16xAF, while the 7900GTX could only do mid-high settings at 1280x1024 resolution.

fanboys have poor reading comprehension?

The difference between the image quality on the Radeon X1900XTX and GeForce 7900 GTX wasn't noticeable, even with Grass Shadows turned off - all that seemed to do was darken the grass texture a little.

and lie?

The BFG Tech GeForce 7900 GTX OC wasn't quite as fast as the Radeon X1900XTX, as we were unable to run the game at its maximum settings. We were able to use almost maximum settings and high quality drivers too

Those scores seem low to me.

I play it at 1680x1050 with 4xAA and most of the other settings turned on/high/over halfway, and it plays pretty smooth on my 7800GT at 500/1150. I get some minor hiccups every now and again at certain areas when its loading (which might could be remedied with more than a gig of RAM), but it plays smoothly other than that. I know I'm not getting 60FPS but its not bad at all. Looks gorgeous too. I play with Bloom instead of HDR, because there just doesn't seem to be much of a difference, and having AA is nice, especially since I did notice much more slowdown with HDR.

Also, I've done those tweaks that extend how far it loads higher res textures, which should in theory hurt smoothness as well.

I don't use self shadows though, as it makes all the NPCs look like they have beards.

That's pretty crazy. I thought I simply had something buggered up when my 7800GT got knocked out cold with this game. I just ordered an x1900xtx yesterday to make the game a little more playable... If I can at least make those benches on my machine, I'll be satisfied. but this 12 FPS crap isn't cutting it.

All I said was that the settings were higher for the X1900XTX. Look who can't read

It's nice that they could get good performance on the x1900xtx, but then why the $#%^&! do I get dips into the low 20's when I first step out of the sewers? I'm running at 1280x960, 4xAAA, Bloom, 16x HQ AF, all settings max, but this is crazy. I turned AAA down to 2x, and turned down some shadow options and distance sliders, and still when I look at an area with trees and grass it drops into the 30's.

the X1900 runs at DX9.0b, while the 7900 runs at DX9.0a, for whatever reason. You can manually change that in the .ini however. Dont know if it makes any difference in speed or not.

I'm enjoying the PQ and the performance on my $400 machine a great deal. Currently running it at 1280x720.

Don't get me wrong, it's great to see a game really stress hardware, but this is insane. We thought that F.E.A.R. was a stressful game, but this just tears it to shreds.

Truth! I don't even turn on AF with 7800GTX, suposedly a fast card. As far as FEAR - personally I never could fiqure out why it used so much resources since the game looked worse than much faster games - but Oblivion really shows you on screen whats bringing system to knees.

and exactly how many ppl can afford 600 dollars? and the extra money on SLI mobo and sli psu? and we all know how SLi setups does badly in mininum framerate department. Just buy a x1900xt for around 400 dollars now and oc it to the max FTW

As i found out in the other thread Oblivion Tweaks.

The X1900 is using the SM2.0b path while the 7900 only uses the SM2.0a path, which seems concurrent that the game uses the SM2.0b as performance enhancments.

But are there any better PLAYING games out there?
It looks quite nice, and it plays like it's the best game in a long time (mainly because it IS the best game in a long time), so overall it's a very nice package.

Screen shots don't do it justice. Playing this game in motion with everything turned up + the ini tweaks is quite breath taking. Take into account the perfect day/night cycles and it's something else.

This is without even touching on the fantastic gameplay.

I agree, FEAR looks just like Chaser with the brightness turned to zero, and it only offers about 10% of the gameplay. Most overrated game of 2005 IMO.

Have you seen FEAR's physics engine? Have you seen the AI in action. They are UNREAL! I have never seen anything that good!

As for Oblivion, those screenshots are absolutely incredible. Im not one for games like Elder Scroll's but that looks fantastic. The only thing is, why do they just give us what they believe. Give us the benchmarks and let us determine what is playable. Not only that what is with the SM2.x path. First off, why would one card be running .b while the other runs .a (Is it because the Nvidia cards do not support 'B', they only support 'A' and 3.0?). Additionally, for a game this new, why in the world is it not using the SM3.0 path; something that both cards support.

So Oblivion doesn't use shader model 3?? Will we ever get to a point that games finally use that?

That's because you've never played it. Play a game like Morrowind or Oblivion, then tell me it's "overrated". Perhaps you think it stinks because you dont want to use your head and play only mindless FPS.......

The word on B3D is that they were still having issues with the SM3 path so they just released it on SM2.0 Most likely there will be a SM3.0 path in the future. This game could certainly use better performance/optimization vs. more IQ at this point. My card, at 1920x1200 begs for a break!
