Oblivion is coming.. upgrade time!

Currently I'm running a X1800XT with a DFI SLI-DR board and A64 3800+

I'm thinking about getting two 7900GTs and going SLI since its about 550 or so to get them at this time. I could also just say screw it and get 1 7900GTX / X1900XT(X) also

My question is, does anyone know if Oblivion even gets any speed bump from SLI? I currently play alot of World of Warcraft and I know currently the benefits from SLI is none for that game.

It hasnt really come out yet. Im waiting for benches and performances to see which card I should go with. I think a 7600GT should complement it nicely, instead of my old 6600GT.

I would say wait for it to come out before spending all that $.

Well, bethesda recommends an X800 gpu, the game will still run fine on lower end stuff according to them.

From what I've been reading, you should be good for 1280x1024 at ~30 fps with your X1800XT. The game is not only shader heavy but also texture heavy. It 'chunks' for some people even with X1900XTs. Your best Oblivion bang for buck may be 4 drive SATA raid rather than slightly faster video.

You got 2G of ram, right?

might be better with nvidia? texturing is where nvidia are strong usually

I'm running 2GB PC4000 at the moment but I'm also using a 2005FPW monitor so I do enjoy gaming at 1680x1050 so I'm not quite sure yet what kind've hit my card will take at that res

I heard someone say that to really get the full experience, you needed a card that had some kind of shader technology, which only the higher end cards had.

My question is, do 7600GT's have that technology? I see they have shader model 3.0 support.

Yeah, that game is gonna rape your (& mine too) X1800XT @ 1680x1050, or in my case, 16x12.

I could skip the upgrades all together and just get the game for my xbox 360.. but I do love my keyboard and mouse and the screenshots for the PC version look alot nicer

Dont forget the mods, and that you will probably be able to push the graphics beyond what you can now in the future.

I get school off Monday (i did today too, snowday) im hopin that my local gamestop or gamecrazy will stay open till midnight, as ill be up until that time anyway.

I really cant wait, when I heard I got Monday off, I just started shaking.

I'll just likely run @ 1280x960 maxed rather than 16x12 medium...you could do the same, 'cept in your case you'd do 1280x800

im running an opty 144 @ 2.8ghz, 1GB @ 311mhz 1T, 7900GT. I should be cool, I want to run at least 1440x900, thats what my widescreen 19inch LCD runs at. Does anyone know if Oblivion is native widescreen?!

Its my birthday Monday so i'll be getting this with some free money! Im glad I preordered as well! If you guys didnt hear EBGames and Gamestop have stopped taking preorders for the collectors edition. Its SOLD OUT! They may make some more for the second batch but I dont know! So if you plan on getting the Collections Edition on Monday you may be SOL.

Yeah if you able to find a store or something that doeasnt sell lots of PC games you may get lucky. I went into EB today and the guy told me that. Two nights ago I had already figured that (and he confirmed my suspicions) because as I was checking the most recent release date on the EB site they did not have the C.E. edition listed so I went to gamestop and checked there as well and they didnt have the PC C.E. either. I checked gogamer.com that night and they still were taking C.E. orders so you may be able to try there if you want to order online.

If you already have a xbox 360 all the reviews basically state that both systems are very close (tested with a x1900xt/x). I'd just get the game for the console insteading of spending money upgrading your PC for just one game. Every review raved about how good the controls were on the console so the loss of a kb/mouse might not be a big deal for this game.

Bethesda ran a PR event with online press getting sneak previews on 3.6 ghz Intel boxes with X1900XTs. Reading between the lines seems to imply the game needs a heapin' helpin' o pixel shaders to truly shine. Not that the 1900 is a slouch in any other department. And with all the AI and physics work going on in the background, possibly a manly CPU.

Course, it could run better on nv hardware, it's just that maybe the publisher/dev couldn't find 7800GTX512s on ebay to equip enough boxes for the dog & pony show. =)

Yes Monday the 20th is the ship date.

It will be available in stores on Tuesday.

my store said they will have it on Monday. The ship date on online sites is the 20th meaning it will be shipped/packaged on Monday. They dont ship from an outside source, they ship from their company so obviously they have to have it on the 20th to ship. But if you buy from stores it will be available Monday (ebgames where I live anyway going on what the manager said). The release date was the 21st for the longest but was recently updated till the 20th

One thing some people may want to consider. Oblivion is going to be shipping with some higher end retail cards in the near future. If your looking to upgrade your card for Oblivion, it may make sense to wait a few weeks after the official release and get the full retail version with your new card, saving another $50. Combined with predicted steady price drops for both ATI and NVIDIA, this would save you quite a bit if you are the patient type.

Oblivion is a shader intensive game and will run better on ATI 1800 series and above then the comparable Nvidia counterpart. I would just buy a 360 and get the game and do not have to worry about anything and still pay less then a new gpu
