In terms of premium audio systems at least. Two weeks ago while in San Diego, I had a Volvo S40 with the Premium Dolby/Pro-Logic II sound system. This week, I have an Infiniti G35 with a Bose system. I have the same audio CDs now as I had two weeks ago in San Diego. The Volvo's system seemed MUCH MUCH better in terms of balance and richness and warmth of sound. The Infiniti seems to only have bass and that's it. And no matter where the bass level is set, the front speakers vibrate and the rearview mirror vibrates. Seems low quality. The G35 is a 2006 model with about 7K miles on the ODO.
And while I'm bashing the G35, it's no where near being as razor-sharp in handling and ride as a 3-series. The G feels much more like an older E38 5-series. The 3 by comparison is like putting on a tight-fitting glove. The VQ in the G is nice to rev but lacks th buttery smoothness of the 3's I6. The VQ has lovely torque of course. I only drove like 90 miles tonight and the G35 is already near half a tank. It likes expensive gas! But I am sure the 3 isn't too far off either.
In hhe end, if I wanted to spend $45K on car, it would NOT be an Infiniti G35! Quite underwhelming. No offense to G35 onwers here at ATOT of course.
That is all.

I've got an '05 G35 and can vouch for the stereo sucking. I mean, come on, its a Bose!! I have the same MP3s in my car that I have on my MP3 player and they sound completely different. There's no treble just a muddled bass. If I had my way, I'd rip the Bose speakers out and put different speakers in just like I did in my MDX but this one is a lease so I can't.
Anyway, maybe you haven't driven a manual G35 or else you wouldn't be talking smack about the engine. I've had a BMW and while it sounded fantastic, the VQ also sounds great. My wife calls it a manly sound rather than the refined I6 in the BMW. I think the G35 fits in real nice below the 330i and the above the 325i. It all depends on your priorities.

I tend to agree on the "refined" stuff. The G's engine sounds more like a sports car's engine and it's overall a more visceral, exhilarating experience. I might go fro a BMW when I'm 50 and I want a quieter car to pamper me, but in the meantime, I like rolling down the window, hearing that engine growl and having the ability to spin the tires in 3rd gear.

The G35 has that nice roar to remind you it has a real and big engine in it. In particular the interior isn't absolute top quality, but it's certainly good enough. I like to think of it as half muscle car, half luxury. It's a nice blend.

I am only 5'5" but I prefer the smallish size of the S40 to the larger size of the G35. But then again I also like smaller roadsters too like the Miata, S2K, Elise. I want a car to fit like a glove and the G certainly does not.
