Obstetrics and Gynaecology, commonly abbreviated OB/GYN.

OBstetrics.
GYNaecology.

Then why the fuck do people say "O-B-Gin?"

Most of the time, you only spell out the letters if it is an acronym, such as S-U-V or A-T-V or F-B-I. Supposedly intelligent and self-righteous people spell out O-B when it should simply be "Ob."

As for Gynaecology - it isn't pronounced Gin-aecology. It is Gyn-aecology.

I always say "Ob-Gyn" (pronounced: Guyn or Gyne or ...) when discussing OB/GYN work with medical students and doctors. Why the fuck not?

The best argument I've heard defending O-B-Gin or O-B-G-Y-N is tradition. Some idiot started the practice, so the idiots will continue the practice. Others say that it is because "Ob" and "Gyn" are not truly pronounceable truncations of the full words. Why the fuck not?

"Ob" like in obtuse or obtain or obstetrics. \\
"Gyn" like in gynaecomastia or gynazole or gynaecology. \\

Just. Saying.

Then you don't converse with medical students or doctors. Or nurses for that matter.

My aunt is a nurse and has never said it that way and I've dated many nurses and they haven't said it that way either. Anyways who cares.

It might just be a Regional/Local thing.

Reminds me of College. This: "*" was called a "Splat" there. Why? Why not?

I'm starting to think people are effing with you. I've worked with and around Dr's and RN's for almost a decade (surgeons and ob-gyns) and never heard anyone say it any other way than OB-GYN.

no, seriously... it's never called "o-b-gin"

it's called o-b-gyn or o-b-g-y-n or just plain o-b or gyno

Then you are certainly a younger person. Decades ago when I began my career in medicine, it was called "O-B-GIN" by OB's themselves, other MD's, nurses, ancillary personnel....about everyone.

The move to saying it by its phonetic spelling O-B-G-Y-N began maybe 15 years ago or a bit more. And this was consistent in the various regions and hospitals I worked, including Walter Reed, Mass General, in Texas, Florida, Georgia, Vermont, New Hampshire, Kentucky, and a few other states.

Of course, using O-B-G-Y-N referred more to the department while using O-B-GIN referred to the MD and his/her field.

My mother in law works as a nurse on the labor and delivery floor of a hospital and I have never heard it pronounced O-B-Gine
