Those i5's are tough chips and will happily run at 90c+ for years and years without a hiccup. Most would advise keeping the voltage below ~1.3 though.

I want to say 95c is max temp for the 970, but I'd try to keep 5-10c back from that under typical loads.

Not that you want to actually be anywhere near 90c, plus if you go much over that you'll start to thermally throttle which can cause some unexpected performance hiccups.

With a decent AIO or air cooler (not even expensive, just decent like the Cooler Master Hyper 212 or something) you should get absolutely nowhere near 90c even under an OC'd load.

Personally, I would aim to keep your CPU full load temps under 60c and your GPU full load temps under 80c. Just because the silicon *can* deal with temps higher than that, doesn't necessarily mean you should, especially if you've got an eye for component longevity.

There are still Core2's floating around whose thermal compound under the IHS dried up long ago and are regularly hitting 80-90c during typical daily tasks. Frankly, evidence suggests that temperature is a non-issue.

Only a few Core 2 Duos have thermal compound underneath the IHS, most of them use solder. Even then, Tjmax is 85 degrees for the soldered ones so you wouldn't want them to run at 80-90 degrees under load. Why would you want your CPU to dump all that heat into your room?

The processor's temperature has nothing to do with how much heat it's dumping into the room. It simply means there's a steeper thermal gradient between CPU die and IHS. If you put a bigger heatsink on it, you'll ultimately end up with the same amount of heat in your room (or rather, marginally more because the larger fan probably uses more power).

Sorry, I'll amend; normal usage load temps, rather than thermal stress test load temps. I'm saying I would aim for target 'gaming' load temps in the 50-60c range, while running SuperPi or something to 'fully' load the CPU would likely spike into the upper 60/70 range.
