Same issue is occurring here in Toronto (4th/5th largest city by population in North America). We're at $14/hr minimum wage and while its effect on unemployment is non-zero, it's a speck in the eye compared to what property value changes are doing to this city.

While better zoning and YIMBYism is one thing. we gotta get mid-sized cities back in the game or everyone's going to have a 2-hour commute to their downtown city job. Ugh.

On topic: Do I like that Ocasio-Cortez did this? I do not. Am I worried about it being the rule and not the exception? No, not yet. Do I think that American conservatives are giddy with joy about being able to whataboutism because of this single instance whereas their own senators and Congressmen don't even hold public events anymore? 100% yes.

Anyone who lives here knows rising rents are the real problem. He doesn’t live here and has maybe never even visited NYC so he saw a story that told him what he wanted to hear.

The real issue in NYC is zoning problems. Zoning sucks.
