Occasional jerks when running games

Currently i rebuild my computer. Here are my updated specs:

AMD 64 2800+
ATI Radeon 9800Pro 128Mb
SOLTEK "SL-K8AN2E-GR" NVIDIA nForce3 250Gb
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy LS
2 sticks of 512 RAM 2700

Whenever i play a game i get frequent jerks regardless of what is going on. When i play Counter-Strike i lag a lot even when i have 15ping. I have just defragmented my hard drive hoping that was the problem but it persisted. I would appreciate all ideas on what i should do. And if you could specific details on how to do it that would be great.

Have you installed all the latest drivers for:

1. Your chipset
2. Your graphics card
3. Your sound card.

Do you have all Windows Updates applied?

uninstall video drivers
uninstall soundcard drivers
reinstall DirectX
reinstall updated video drivers
reinstall updated soundcard drivers

I had a similar issue playing MaxPayne2 and that's what their support line told me to do. It worked. Good luck?

What quality settings are the game on, like resolution, is aa and af on, etc. Any problems with benchmarking, if you did any at all

I ran a benchmark on D3 using 1024 X 768 on high quality and shadows enabled and got 44 FPS. But when i play it still jerks occasionally.

Even when i turn the video settings all the way down it still jerks occasionally. I heard something about PCI Latency. Could that be the problem?

if u didnt change it then that wouldn't be the problem. Providing the drivers and stuff ar upto date, the only thing i can think about is a program running in the background that is causing the problem. If you want you can try this: go Start, run, and type msconfig, on the first tab, choose selective startup, then uncheck startup items. this will remove any third party programs from running when windows starts. then apply and restart the machine and still try it on the lowest settings and stt what happens and let me know

I unchecked all of the apps in the startup menu and restarted. I then ran Painkiller on the lowest settings and everything turned off and it was still jerky.

I've had the same problem. I've noticed it in counterstrike, It will just skip frames, but the FPS will remain very high (around 60-80+ range) This happens for no apparent reason. Counter-strike Isnt particularly demanding
My specs are as follows
AMD XP 2600+ (Barton)
ECS KT600-A
Radeon 9700 Pro made by BBA (though I swapped to my old video card to see if it still happened, and it did. My old video card is a XFX Ge Force MX 440 )
512 Samsung pc2700 Ram
Onboard sound. <--- hmm

Initially i thought my video card was skipping processes due to heat, but I monitered it more closely during benchmarks and playing, and it's doesnt get terribly hot. So I ruled that out, I tried reinstalling video drivers and Direct X, that doesn't help either... Im stumped also... When the game is running properly it runes Perfect! then out of no where it skips frames, I can play Doom3 on 1024x768 on high detail with 4x AA with no problem. But it randomly skips frames in that game too !

I have heard that ATI video cards with updated drivers don't do well with nForce3 motherboards. Could this possibly be the problem and if so, what should i do about it?

Trying different CATs or Omegas is a good idea, don't forget to use driver cleaner in between to be certain they don't get borked. Next in line is the Creative drivers&bloatware, and try :music: musical pci slots with it:music: and see if that resolves it.

I'm sure it is from your description, but to be certain, that is a 256bit 9800p and not the crippled version, correct?

For install order with that setup you should have installed OS+service packs, Forceware UDPs, DX9.b/c, Cats/Omegas, creative stuff, dealers' choice. Set your (T)RAS to 10 for ram, AGP aperture to 256mb, and disable fastwrites for TSing purposes.

I tried all of your solutions but had not success. When i rebuilt my comp. i didn't reformat my hard drive. Could this be a problem? What about heat? Is it possible that my video card is getting too hot? I have been searching the internet for 3-4 days straight and have tried everything under-the-sun but nothing has worked. I hope someone has a miricle cure for my problem.

Im not talking about just online games. This problem occurs with ALL of my games like Painkiller and Doom3. And it doesn't matter what is going on during gameplay it still stutters every 15 sec. or so. Even when i turn off all of the details and shadows and turn down the resolution i still have this problem.

At this point I'd do a fresh format&install using the install order I provided above, and with the latest Forcewares, CATs, Creative's, and with 8x AGP and fastwrites disabled in the bios, vid ram caching turned on, and check that fastwrites is disabled under the GART tab in the ATi CP as well.

You might want to give the power user's bios for the SL-K8AN2E-GR a go too. You can find it near the bottom of the first page of
this thread under Zebo's post, who has been kind enough to host everything

Are you running any motherboard monitoring programs while you play games?

The mouse input on my current nForce3 system pauses briefly, but very noticably, every time the nVidia system utility reads updated information. I doubt this behavior is limited to my setup, but I'm sure the extent of the impact varies with different hardware and software combinations.
