OC'd 2500k vs. 2700k

Folks, i think i already know the answer to this but wanted to get y'all's opinion. I'm a designer and work with a lot of layouts, photos and videos. I do not play games at all.

I have a video project coming up and my old QX6700 won't cut it for rendering speeds even with MPE enabled. So, I have considered getting a new mobo/cpu/memory and a striped hdd to help supplement all my other existing parts.

Budget is a concern. IF i went with the 2500k, that extra $100 will help me get the HDD's to stripe. Otherwise it's a 2700k with just an existing HDD that's low on space.

I realize both are fairly stable OC'd, but i would rather not do it. However, if the 2500k oc'd can come close to the performance of the 2700k non-oc'd, while being able to get the additional drives, i'll do it.

Can't go wrong with those CPUs. Get 2500/2600 without K designations since you won't be overclocking. If HDD space is a real concern, 2500 is still a huge improvement over the QX6700. It's going to be almost 2x faster. Take a look at this review for 3D video and rendering benchmarks and look at Q6600 for reference.

I would grab the 2500k over the 2500 anyway, just for the resale value.

get 2600 unlocked sandy,most will do an easy 4.8-5.0 ghz on air

Mine does 4.5@ 1.275 volts and 5ghz at 1.430

Anyway, I would say go for the 2500k. The performance difference doesn't justify the cost IMHO unless the price doesn't mater. The HT on the 2600k adds roughly 30% performance on 2nd pass video encoding. 1st most is nearly identical (according to Bench on the main site).

So I say go for the 2500, and get that 2nd HD.

Why someone wouldn't pay $10 more for the 2500K is beyond me. That $10 can easily get you an extra Ghz, even on stock cooling.

Thanks for the input, folks. My apologies, i meant 2600/k, not 2700.

Those benchmarks are promising! I think being able to get two more drive's and getting 2x faster processing from the 2500k almost sounds like a no-brainer. I can probably pair up just one extra HDD with one of the existing and bump up the memory. The extra drives are really meant so i can have a proper multi-drive setup, which is ideal for Premiere/After Effects.

If you have a MicroCenter local to you, that, too, is a no brainer. Newegg just cannot touch MC's processor prices and with their $40 off 1155 motherboards (and their mb prices are about as good as Newegg if not sometimes better), it'd be crazy to buy it anywhere else.

For instance, last weekend I bought a 2500K and Gigabyte Z68X-UD3H-B3 combo for $259.98, and that's before taking off a $15 MIR on the motherboard. Newegg couldn't touch that.

Just remember that many of those Microcenter deals are Loss leaders. They hope you will buy some very high margin cables and such to offset the cost. Since newegg doesn't have a retail store front they can't exactly do that. Either way though, if you have a MC nearby (Unlike me ) you are quite fortunate!

What you want from it with a new system. How much time you wish to cut off the rendering. Your Q how much it takes and your new 2500 in rendering time.
