Ochem help!!!

I had a lab in ochem where I have three unknowns. I have to figure out what they are. I have gotten the infrared spectra, melting point and boiling point, solubility test, and some hinsberg test. Im horrible in labs so I dont fvck up my As because because of this lab. Is there any way I can make sure (i.e compare spectra with 100 something known I have to match) I gotten them correctly? Reward might be included if I get em all correctly to those help me the most. Thank you

do the IR spectras reveal nothing about the molecules themselves? like do they have peaks at 1600 to show double bonds or such? meling and boiling points can rarely identify the moelcuesl themselves but they can help clairify answers - such as a molecule with a high bp and mp means that there mite be alot of hydrogen bonding and such.

Im not relaly sure i understand ur post in the first place....

IR reveals functional group such as amine, amide, carboxylic ring etc so of course it helps. I'm suppose to do additional test to check if it's a 1primary amide, secondary amide, 3 amide etc. Since Im time press, I couldnt do it. Anyone know a way to make sure what I figure my unknown to be is right? Perhaps a chem program that show similiar IR spectra to mine and I can compare to it? Would that work? One way I know for sure is to have someone test my unknown for mass spectra (to get molecular weight) but where am I going to find one.

uh, it takes like 15 minutes to read over which groups show which peaks on IR. Mass spec is even easier to figure out, it's all a matter of adding things up and looking for fingerprints of compounds. seriously. it's really easy. if you know which compounds you are supposed to have you can always double check with SDBS. it's really useful.


you really should learn that crap, it takes a few minutes and once you learn it, you dont forget.

might as well try dissolving it, as that test at room temp only takes a second, and if it turns out nonpolar, thats a good indication that its a long C chain. Also, if the boiling pt range is greater than about 5 degrees celcius, that its probably a mixture.
