Hey, i've never dealt with overclocking yet, but i am very interested...

Anyway, i am running an AMD XP 3000+ on a ASUS A7N8X-E deluxe MOBO with a ThermalTake 11+ volcano HeatSink, with Micron DDR2700 ram. anyway, im very knowledgable with computers, and i kno how to enter the bio's , just really never tried to edit them.

Now, im wondering if anyone thinks this is would be a good idea to overclock, and if so, please help me out anyway possible, or link me to a place to read how.

Thankx

Only overclock if A: you get a new high end video card, or B: If your processor isn't performing to your expectations now and you want to squeeze out some extra power.

Yeh right.

My motto is if I can squeeze something extra from it I will. I paid for it, and want the most for my money. My wife says I go overboard. My calculator is overclocked, my PC is watercooled, and my truck is supercharged.

Only overclock if you're willing to pay the consequences. I wouldn't overclock on that junk volcano though. You're temps are prolly already a little high.

Ditto with above poster. Overclocking is the best part of buying a new PC. I want every bit of performance I can get, even if I don't "need" it. It's sort of an E-pe*is thing.

What's wrong with Volcano's? Mine has served me extremely well for a year now :\

Well it depends on how well your RAM overclocks. As you are using PC2700 RAM I gues you Athlon is a FSB333 3000+, so you'll want to raise your FSB to 400 while lowering the Multiplier. Maybe your RAM will work, maybe not. My PC2700 won't even do 175MHz (up from 166MHz) so I am getting new RAM.

I'm using OCZ Performance Series PC3200 CL2, so running at 200fsb is to be expected. I've seem some PC2700 that runs at 200, albeit with somewhat relaxed settings, and some that barely even does 166. So it's a crapshoot. But it's certain that one stick is more likely to overclock than 2 in a dual channel configuration.

my volcano 12 is great is does the job of cooling excellently. i dont care about noise, if there is any, i drown it out with 5.1 on games.

he has answered your question. The only way to oc that chip to up UP FSB out of spec of your rated memory. But microns good stuff should be able to handle 3200 with 2.8 volts.

Here's what I'd try.

Chipset voltage 1.6
mem voltage 2.8
CPU Vcore 1.65
FSB 200
memory timmings 2.5-3-3-11

If it boots try running prime95 a couple hours. If that fails up your CPU core to 1.70. It should pass but if it does'nt it's your mem failing likly.

if everything passes then tighten memory to 2-3-3-11 or even 2-3-2-11. so many varibles now like lowering Voltages and see it things still pass...like upping FSB and seeing if they pass. All you can do is learn by doing and taking notes along the way. My first system took days to overclock and I thought overclocking was the biggest waste of time ever! Simply buy the better stuff and get on with my life. Now I can dial in a system pretty well in 30 minutes with minor tweaks over days while priming.

Of course you could run you mem at 5:4 but I'll leave that one out of it.

That's a new one :Q Why your calculator isnt fast enough for you? I've never seen a calculator that doesnt calculate things fast enough unless you are doing some crazy nuclear physics 100 lines formula calculation. hehe.

That's assuming his multiplier isn't hardlocked

Dude,
Looking at your rig, you've some nice hardware.

You have your Down/Up rate backward for your Cable or DSL. 2MB would be your download speed, 384 would be your upload.

Unless you purchased your equipment with a GENEROUS warranty and return policy, don't try overclocking.

While to the inexperienced it may sound very exciting, it can be an extreme hassle and is risky. There's all sorts of variables you have to consider, such as CPU & Motherboard temperature, FSB, multipliers, voltage, power supply, RAM speed, fan CFM, and on and on.

The Athlon XP 3000+ is already near the limit of what its core can handle and runs fairly hot.

You could bump it slightly, like to 3200+ speed, but you'd not notice any difference. To get to the point of an observeable gain in performance you'd have to step up to a 64 level CPU, or switch to a better heatsink/fan combo and go with an unlocked XP 2500+ mobile clocked to 2300 Mhz. And even then the gain may not be noticable.

Note that to go to an AMD 64 CPU you'd need a new motherboard.

Good luck,
PCM
