I've just got my hands on new sempron + MSI Neo Platinum (refurb from newegg)+ Thermaltake Venus12 hsf. I was able, easily, to get it to 240FSB (1.6v) , run prime95 overnight , no problems. system feels very robust, boots and responds very quickly... i've run just one benchmark pcmark04 , here i'm somewhat dissapointed, with the same memory+video card+HD, it scored slightly (1.5%) lower than mobile athlon 2600+@ 2.4Ghz (on Asus a7n8xMobo)....so... well... i thnik, if you can get one @ around $100-110 it's a good buy, anything over that, XP M is still, after all that long time, better choice.

Did't really stress it too much yet... but as it is it runs pretty hot (42C idle, 56C Load)... when tried to rasie it to 250 it wouldn't boot (at the same vcore as 240)...but i haven't tried playing with different multis yet (it's as with the others, you can only change it down - from the default 9)...

Is Cool N Quiet available for the Sempron 3100+? If so then enabling that will lower temps dramatically when the CPU is not in use.

Yes CollNQuiet is an option i can select in Bios...i'll try it, thanks.

I've tried to change the multi...and at most scenarios it just wouldn't post. (i have lowered the HT to x1 and set memory to run at 100 mhz speed, just to eliminate them as a culprits)) is it that AGP/PCI lock again? i think so, it wouldn't post at 8x260 (lower mhz than 9x240)...any thoughts would be welcome

a little update....

well, i have left it overnight running prime95 @ 240 FSB (2180mhz) , but this time at STOCK vcore...and amazingly, it didn't matter, it didn't fail the test. (i run memory @ 166mhz, so with 240 fsb it's actually at 200mhz) but again, any slight change in FSB , 243, 4, 5 ect... would result in no post, or freeze at HD detection.... looks to me like the cpu has a lot to offer after all, but is being hold back by malfunctioning pci/agp lock again.... oh...and temps are much better with stock voltage 37-50

set AGP freq to 67 MHz in bios, I dont know if that mobo h as AGP/PCI Lock, is it the KT800PRO chispet? Some early revisions have faulty AGP/PCI locks and will need to be replaced.

I've tried that , didn't help, it's an nForce3 250 board... the lock is at least partially working, 20% OC is not bad after all.

Try doing a BOIS update if you dont have the latest version, Im sure lots of us would want to see the potential of this chip. I would bet 2500 MHz is possible.

Thanks for the link. That guy Rcochran is beyond ignorant. Nothing to back up his own wild claims of performance hits, 64bit doubling performance, etc, etc. On ebay, these processors are going for about 89$ no reserve with Retail box. That alone is enough to warrant the choice of Sempy 3100+ over the 2800+ A64. He was only using a generic based Heatsink. Not even using the AlphaPal 8150 on it that he also has on his work bench. He's probably going to hit atleast 2.6 with the Alpha on it with good tempetures below 55c.

Sempron has both SKT A and SKT 754 versions.

Currently, the only SKT 754 version is the 3100+. It is very similar to the A64 2800+ but has only 256K cache (1/2 as much as the A64 2800+) and does not support 64 bit extensions.

In many applications it is essentially the same speed as the A64 2800+, and therefore should game very well.

The only problem is that in some stores it is almost the same price as the A64 2800+ (at least the last time I checked, so maybe prices have dropped since then), so make sure you are getting a good deal if you decide to give up the cache and 64bit capability.

it's encouraging to see it reaching these speeds... the max stable speed i've been able to get it to so far is 250FSB with mem running at 166mhz (there's really no performance hit due to memory running async , i've run memory benchmarks for both sync and async setups, and they were virtually the same)....

i'm booting up with 240 FSB and then cranking it up to 250 with clockgen.... (can't boot up with 250 set in bios) ...runs perfectly at default voltage (prime95 all labor day weekend, no errors).... so... 25% on default voltage.... quite impressive... i'm tempted to try the mobo the guy in the link above is using....

woo hoo...hehe, me again... different memory, different story...

got me a GEIL pc-4200 (3-8-8) ...and FSB problem went away... stable at fsb 266 (x9 = 2.4 Ghz, mem 1:1)...vcore 1.6 temps at load 58C....
